Forum: Ending felony prostitution

Updated: May 3, 2013 6:33AM

Thank you for your editorial voicing support for ending felony prostitution in Illinois (“Prostitutes should not be felons,” March 25). Felony prostitution is a failed, 13-year-old experiment that is trapping vulnerable people in a cycle of exploitation.

In response, End Demand Illinois has drafted and is lobbying for Senate Bill 1872 to eliminate felony prostitution throughout Illinois, not just in Cook County. We believe this reform is critical, as the sex trade is thriving in communities throughout Illinois.

Most people in prostitution face chronic homelessness and mental health or substance abuse issues and engage in prostitution for basic necessities such as food and shelter. Survivors of the sex trade deserve our help and support, not endless punishment.
