I have been a Will County resident since 1973 and live in unincorporated New Lenox Township. I’ve worked as a social worker, advocating for those in need for 36 years. Now, I need to advocate for myself.
When I moved to my current home from Joliet about 10 years ago, I became painfully aware of the differences in ordinances regarding leaf burning. While Joliet did not allow it, leaf burning was commonplace in my new subdivision. After a neighbor burned leaves every few days over two months about three years ago, I was hospitalized for lung damage from the smoky air.
The effects of my lung damage continue today. Leaf burning adversely affects thousands of people, and it’s avoidable. We have outlawed smoking in public buildings, but I cannot sit on my deck and have lunch during the fall. I strongly support the proposed Will County ordinance to restrict leaf burning in the unincorporated areas.
