Forum: Social media an easy excuse

Updated: March 17, 2014 11:39AM

The recent fights at Crete-Monee High School are being blamed on social media. As a school board member in District 201U, I say hogwash.

Social media devices are tools, and like any tool in the hands of minors they should be monitored by responsible adults, i.e. parents and guardians. Responsible, involved parenting is what is lacking in far too many households throughout this nation. Too many parents are trying to be buddies rather then authority figures. That coupled with the disintegration of the traditional family and a lack of self-discipline are the root causes of such bad behavior.

Social media devices have no place in a school, whose officials cannot and should not be expected to monitor social media usage by students. That’s the job of parents.

District 201U will continue to do all it can to provide a safe environment for students, but it’s primarily the responsibility of parents to teach their children responsible behavior and to monitor what they do after and before school.
