I enjoyed reading about art teacher John Howard and his class’s trip to Hidden Pond in the Palos division of the Cook County Forest Preserve District. Talk about inspiring!

We applaud the Ashford House and its staff. Our family was to hold a wedding shower at 1 p.m. May 19. Guests from Florida, Georgia and Indiana were arriving to the chaos. All were traumatized. Despite their own grief, the Ashford House management and staff stepped up. Thinking foremost of their patrons and guests and through their tenacity, they managed to move our party to Gatto’s Restaurant & Bar in Tinley Park. Thank you, Gatto’s. Our party was a great success. We are indebted to the Ashford House.

By sweeping the Chicago Cubs in the Crosstown Classic, the Chicago White Sox proved that they can trounce a minor league team.

Everyone’s property taxes keep going up because of the rising cost of education. The Chicago Public Schools system is suffering for money. Yet, the Democrats in Illinois passed legislation that will allow state Rep. Monique Davis a tax exemption from paying the $450,000 she owes to the CPS system. Not only do these politicians feel they are above the law, but now they are writing the law to protect themselves from us. It’s time to get them out of office. Quit voting for these Democrats who want to steal your money and legalize it.

My wife bought a subscription to the SouththownStar. I’m going to keep that subscription as long as Phil Kadner is writing for the newspaper. His column about Illinois supporting Internet poker was right on.

A brawl broke out between St. Rita and St. Laurence high schools’ baseball teams. For the past three years Pete Lotus, the coach from St. Laurence, has shown nothing but disrespect for other teams and players by having his kids chant like Little Leaguers in the dugout. I believe it’s about time that they get rid of this coach.

Why don’t we just lower ourselves and make prostitution legal? Just think of all of the taxpaying jobs you have just created.

The Oak Lawn administration almost forgot to collect $700,000 in taxes from Target. Now we find out that the fire department had more than $1 million in overtime pay for our firemen to basically chase ambulances. No one is being fired for this abuse of our taxes? I can’t wait for election time.

We all have free will. We have the power to be good or bad. Remember the golden rule. Do unto others as you would like others to do unto you.

Why is the Southland always ignored? I didn’t see anything mentioned on any of the news segments on places to go or things to see for the visitors of the NATO Summit in regards to the Southland. It’s a shame that they would visit Chicago and miss out on such an amazing area.

From what I have read, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s company, Bain Capital, took over struggling companies to make a profit not create jobs. Romney laid off employees, raided pension funds and walked away with millions. Also, I hear when he was governor of Massachusetts that his job record was atrocious. Really? This guy is running on his record of creating jobs? Give me a break!

I lived through the Vietnam War era. How our Vietnam veterans were treated was appalling. The Korean War veterans are fighting for some recognition. How will the veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan be treated as they come back? Let’s look at the past before we start a new future.

Get rid of the lobbyists. Stop foreign aid. Close the tax loopholes for the rich corporations. Say no to giving billions more to Afghanistan to bulk up their army. Take care of America first, please.

I don’t understand the folks complaining about the detention center for Crete. It’s not exactly Wilmette or Winnetka. The Southland has been crying about jobs and opportunity. The state of Illinois has a huge debt but it’s against a for-profit institution. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement should be at some of these protests. This is about illegal immigrants who are not supposed to be here.

For those who are concerned about Chicago Bull Derrick Rose receiving his salary while he is out eight to 12 months, I suggest you contact his agent.

There were times in history when the churches rule went supremely unchallenged. We call these two inglorious periods the Dark Ages and Middle Ages.

Why are we demonizing the rich? Only a small percentage of the rich inherited their money. The rest of us came from humble beginnings and worked hard to get what we have. When we were poor we never were jealous or envious of rich people. We admired them and strived to make a better life for ourselves. Through hard work, we did it. Why are we driving a wedge between people who work hard, no matter what their economic status is?

It seems like every time you turn around the teachers union needs another raise. I was in a union for 30 years. We had to take a pay cut three times just so we could keep our jobs. The state of Illinois is broke. You better wake up. Where is the money going to come from? You have kept the state broke for the longest time.
