Why doesn’t the U.S. Postal Service sell advertisements on the face of the stamps?

I was so proud of my granddaughter at her eighth-grade graduation. She gave a wonderful speech thanking parents, family and her teachers for their love and support while at St. Cajetan School learning the five R’s: reading ’riting, ’rithmetic, respect and responsibility.

Just like people have to get their backgrounds checked when applying for a job, I think there should be a background check in order to receive welfare. There are a lot of people lying just so they get welfare and everything else for free.

To the person who rear-ended that beautiful 1953 Corvette in New Lenox on Memorial Day: I hope whatever you were doing at the time was worth it.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to be commended for passing a resolution endorsing same-sex marriage. The board voted to support equality and to oppose discrimination. How can there be anything wrong with that?

I am a die-hard Chicago White Sox fan. With summer coming, I’m starting to hear again complaints about why so few people show up at U.S. Cellular Field. With them starting to play better, more people will show up. But the way everything has gone up for parking, tickets, food, drinks, gasoline, souvenirs, etc, I’m better off staying at home, watching it on television and supporting the Sox. So let’s not keep ripping Sox fans for this.

It’s amazing how many people need the constant reminder around this time of year. Please do not leave your pet in the car on a hot day. If the police feel that your pet is in distress, they will break the window and take your pet. That is much better than the end result if they don’t. If he likes to go for a ride in the car, then please use the drive-through. Do not leave your pet in a locked car with the windows down just an inch or two while you are in that air-conditioned store.

The billions of dollars being spent on political campaigns since the Citizens United U.S. Supreme Court case proves that decision to be a disaster. Even if the Supreme Court is correct about money being free speech, they must have forgotten that even free speech is limited. While it seems there is no money to support important government programs, there’s plenty to go around to get a candidate elected, beholden to those who contributed most to the campaign. Congress has to find a way to limit campaign contributions if for nothing else than sparing us from campaign overkill.

Require all school administrators to contribute toward their own Teacher Retirement System pension. The amount going into TRS would be the same. Only the source would change. Creditable earnings would be reduced. Consequently, retirement benefits would be reduced also. How simple is this?

My husband has been waiting three years for a kidney-pancreas transplant. He has been type 1 diabetic since he was 14 years old and on dialysis for a year. On May 28, we got the call for a possible donor and were told to be ready. We have a 6-year-old son who hates seeing his dad doing the insulin shots and going to his dialysis treatments. So far my husband is doing fine, but only time will tell. We cannot express our love enough for this unknown family who helped us. Thank you, Gift of Hope and organ donors.

Memorial Day should always be a day when we honor the warriors, but not the wars. We should honor those brave men and women who have fought for their country but not the leaders who sent them there.

I wonder how many of the world leaders who attended the NATO Summit were impressed with Chicago. I wonder how many were able to meet our crooked politicians who run Chicago. How many of those protesters would be marching if the cameras were not running?

Crete is an old-fashioned farming and family-oriented community. It’s a good place to live, raise a family or retire. Illinois has a brand-new unused penal facility in southern Illinois that would be suitable to house illegal immigrants. Why waste more tax money on unneeded facilities?

I keep hearing about how fat Americans are. How are they determining this? If they are using that body mass index calculator, they are crazy. That BMI rating is so flawed it’s not even medical science. It only takes your height and weight. According to the BMI calculator, I’m obese at 5 feet 10 inches tall and 210 pounds. It takes no account of if I exercise with weights and have some dense muscle. Some professional athletes would come up obese if 210 is the standard. I don’t think Americans are any more fat nowadays than they ever were.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney saved many companies and jobs by revamping companies to make them profitable. Some companies closed and some employees lost their jobs. However, more companies stayed open, which would have closed. Look at the record of job creation and profit of Bain Capital. Mitt Romney would be well-compensated for a job well done.
