You know you are getting older when you remember the M in MTV stood and was known for music television, not “16 and Pregnant” or “Teen Mom.”

Congratulations to St. Xavier University’s women’s basketball coach Bob Hallberg, who at age 68 finished in first place in the Memorial Day 5K race for males in the 65 to 69 age group. Way to go, Coach!

Fat people and smokers vote. Fat people and smokers pay more than their fair share in taxes. Fat people and smokers have been to war, and some made the ultimate sacrifice. Fat people and smokers contribute expertise, talent, love and giving to our society. Rather than pick on the fat people and smokers and concern themselves about the supersized drinks at fast-food chains, why doesn’t the government concentrate on the supersized murderers, rapists, pedophiles and drug cartels of our society?

While driving around the Southland I noticed most of the speed-limit signs are covered by tree branches or bushes. Who is responsible for uncovering them?

There was an article titled “Enough is enough” about Chicago Public Schools teachers demanding theirs. I wonder if these teachers think about where the money comes from to pay them? Why don’t these teachers just go door to door to their neighbors to demand that their neighbors’ property taxes be raised so teachers can get theirs? No wonder our system is collapsing and these so-called highly educated teachers don’t get it. These are the people brainwashing our future citizens? I am glad I am on the downward spiral in life because these people are heading for a very rude awakening.

Here are two questions concerning the NATO conference I’d like to see answered: Who paid the bus fare for all the protestors and, two, how do the protestors justify throwing bottles, bicycles, paint, fencing, etc., at the police?

While Caterpillar continues to report record profits, it also continues to put the squeeze on its workforce. As an example, Joliet workers are being forced to take reductions. We can be assured that the executives will be rewarded with more than generous bonuses and compensation packages. What a wonderful world!

I have to ask: Is this “Recovery Summer” No. 3?

Regarding the proposed detention center in Crete: Why don’t we follow the law and deport these illegal immigrants instead of worrying about housing them and wondering how to get more tax dollars to support them. I. for one, am taxed enough. The well has been sucked dry.

I keep seeing signs saying, “Start seeing motorcycles.” I do. I saw a guy on a crotch rocket doing wheelies on LaGrange Road the other day. He cut off me and several other motorists including a truck driver.

Someone commented that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney did a good job for Bain Capital. Yes, Romney did a good job making a profit for investors. But Romney was acting in the best interest of investors not the average worker. A good president needs to look out for the common good, not just a few at the top.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to declare war on liquor stores and convenience stores to stop gangs. Is he aware that gangs also hang out at parks, school yards and basketball courts where they can gather freely?

Regarding stop signs at a school three-way: Four words: No cops, no stops.

I thought the economy was still in the sewer. Yet, Tinley Park and Orland Park are both building mega apartment buildings close to the train station, and these projects are going to cost a ton of money. Young professionals are not going to be buying over there. They are going to be buying downtown and on Chicago’s Near North Side. The people who will probably be buying there are retired people with a fixed income. I’m interested to see what is going to happen over the next few years with these mega apartment buildings.

We are going to miss U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald. So much crime and corruption, so little time. I hope the next U.S. attorney is not in anyone’s pocket. Illinois is a corrupt cesspool at the local, county and state levels.

A group of boys on the playground tease another boy who is not as athletic as they are. A group of girls tease another girl because she doesn’t have the “in” clothes like all the other girls. A group of adults demonize another group of adults because they are different, they have a different sexuality or skin color or ethnic background. Does anyone see the connection here?

The Chicago Cubs should be playing at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood. That’s where minor league teams are playing these days.

We need to get some real politicians in office in Cook County. Let’s get rid of Gov. Pat Quinn, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and others to straighten out this mess.

It seems the message of protesters to NATO got fogged over by the police — all of ’em from the Illinois State Police and the National Guard to the Chicago police. And at whose expense?
