Sept. 9 is National Grandparents Day. Happy Grandparents Day to all the loving grandmas and grandpas.

Chicago

I’m sort of retired now, so I watch television more than ever. Well, I’ve rediscovered the old show “The Rockford Files.” Boy do I miss a good one-hour show that has a sensible plotline, good acting and a heck of a real man like James Garner in the role of Jim Rockford. These shows now that legitimize men looking like women just turn me off. These ambiguous male characters seem to be the choice these days. Give me ole Jim Rockford any day.

What ever happened to Agnes “Aunt Aggie” Albinger, of Monee, who was going to lose her farm? Lots of people gathered around to help. Where is she now?

Two perfect examples explaining why nobody should be voting Democrat are Gov. Pat Quinn and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. If anybody thinks these two show that they are for helping the working people, then you must have a bag over your head. These two are for the rich and giving money to foreigners and the so-called poor.

I am involved in helping young women with their problems. I would like to know where all of these women who are having babies every year with different men are. If you know, then speak out. If you don’t know but are just assuming, then stop.

I’m a longtime resident of Tinley Park. Residents are fortunate to have village officials along with a forward-thinking public works department that took the extra step to install bicycle lanes on newly paved roads within town. Bicycling is one of the best methods of transportation as well as good for the environment and is great for the many health benefits. Keep the bike lanes coming.

Now isn’t that special? President Obama understands the people’s frustrations about unemployment and foreclosures, yet he can throw a $30,000-per-plate campaign fundraiser. That is disgusting.

RC from Oak Lawn

Make our day, Republican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney. Give our senior citizens a life that they fought for, a retirement that they worked for and a country they prepared for for their children and grandchildren. God bless America.

Edward from Frankfort

The value of my home has decreased significantly. I would like to have some remodeling done. I’ve noticed that the cost to have work done has not come down with the value of my home. I guess I’ll pass.

Orland Park

A human is not plugged into an electric socket, run on batteries or have a combustible engine. What keeps your heart beating? It’s not an accident that body parts work with each other. How can some say we evolved by chance? It’s like going to some distant planet, void of life, and finding a wristwatch. Would you say it evolved? If we took trillions of letters and dropped them into a pile multiple times, would they one time fall into a written book? This is how atheists and evolutionists explain our existence on a planet suited for life.

When is the Illinois Legislature going to realize criminals don’t care about laws? Stop leaving good people defenseless. I have owned firearms for many years I’ve never seen them as a problem solver. Unfortunately, criminals do. If 15-year-olds are willing to shoot police officers, what chance do good citizens stand? Enough is enough! We have a voice. Let’s use it and demand our rights.

Former Rich Central High School varsity girls basketball coach Bryan Craig knew exactly what he was doing. He used his own money to have his racy book, “It’s Her Fault,” published. Now look where he’s at. He’s on administrative leave with pay from his guidance counselor job and receiving free publicity while he watches the dollar signs increase.

When a nonunion worker can do the job for less cost, then they will get the job. If a union worker would offer his quality service for the same cost as these other people, he would get the job immediately. But these union workers seem to be completely overpaid. Others can do quality work at a fraction of the price.

Maybe the Illinois public smoking ban is the reason people would go to a casino in Indiana rather than one in Illinois. Evidently, smoking and gambling go together. There are some who can’t go 10 minutes without a cigarette. That’s why they all go to Indiana.

The U.S. Army should patrol the streets of Chicago. The crime out there is getting ridiculous. If the Army patrols the streets, maybe the crime would go down. These gangs are getting way out of line.

A commenter asked why her husband who is a carpenter can’t find work yet non-English speakers are working. It’s sad to say, but the carpenter charges a rate according to their scales. The non-English-speaking person charges the rate of feeding his family.

I was saddened to read that citizen journalist Paul Eisenberg will no longer have a column in the SouthtownStar. I loved his columns and he will be sorely missed.

Marion from Steger

Regarding Chicago White Sox home attendance: Could it be that since the 2005 World Series win, many Sox fans fled Cook County as well as Illinois while the gettin’ was good? With real estate taxes going up and home values down, I wish I could join them. We on fixed incomes are the real losers.
