Since we are lowering our standards for certain people to pass tests, how about this one for driving tests? Just put the key in and turn the radio on. You passed.

I would like to express my thanks to the angel who found my purse in the shopping cart in Target’s parking lot and turned it in at the lost and found.

SAB from Orland Park

Country Club Hills Mayor Dwight Welch now has 24-hour around-the-clock security surveillance at his home and every 30 minutes is monitored by the city’s police department. It might be more cost-effective if Welch purchased two pit bulls, a fire alarm, a motion detector and a burglar-alarm system. This should all put the mayor’s mind at ease. Welch could then charge it all to the city and simply include it in his annual teddy bear expense account.

My father always said there are only two types of Democrats in this world. They are the very rich and crooked and the very poor and dumb. I believe him now after what happened again after four years of misery.

Why is Midlothian spending more than $200,000 to remodel and refurbish the village hall when we are in debt?

Dave from Midlothian

Do we really need a Lenny’s Gas N Wash on Harlem Avenue at 194th Street? The 24/7, mega gasoline station with diesel truck car wash, convenient store or fast-food window and the sale of packaged liquor is simply unnecessary. It endangers the safety and well-being of the residential area. It is wrong in so many ways, but money talks. Our tax dollars should also be able to speak out. We residents have a right to live in a safe, nurturing environment to raise our children and provide us a sense of security through our retirement years.

One of the greatest moments in Scouting is when a young man achieves the rank of Eagle Scout. Congratulations to Adam Sekula in accomplishing his goal of earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Here is a young man who has a passion for Scouting, was undaunted by challenges and stayed focused until reaching his objective. Adam reflects the values Scouting can instill in other young men. His accomplishments and dedication to purpose is truly inspirational and should be an example for others to follow.

Jim from Frankfort

Dixmoor Trustee Michael Smith was indicted on three counts of official misconduct, two counts of forgery and two counts of theft. He also allegedly impersonated a police officer to get a perk. In March 2011, Smith was charged with resisting arrest and driving without a license. This history is unbelievable. But what is more unbelievable is how this guy is not thrown out of office already.

I’ve found that the people who work for the state of Illinois are ignorant and the rudest people around. They act like they are doing you a favor by waiting on you. I pay my taxes and I would like a little respect.

Joan from Oak Forest

Now that U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush is representing more and more people within the SouthtownStar’s coverage area, maybe we can get your staff to investigate his record. Maybe you can get columnist Phil Kadner to look into Rush’s finances or voting record.

I guess you could categorize Dixon, Ill., as a “sleepy” downstate community of around 16,000. However, considering the guilty plea of longtime city comptroller Rita Crundwell for stealing $53 million from the city coffers, you could revise that categorization to “comatose.” Where in the world were the city managers who failed to identify Crundwell’s illicit activity that spanned years. Even more amazing, where does a town of Dixon’s size have $53 million to throw around indiscriminately to begin with?

Tom from Evergreen Park

I’ve had 30 years of waitressing experience. It’s the quality, not the quantity, that counts when it comes to tips. I used to take a smaller station and made more money than any of those who were running around and couldn’t take care of their tables. Also, when there are men and women at a table you do not ask, “Are you guys ready to order?” It is so stupid to refer to women as guys. I made more money being friendly and nice than rushing around. Pay attention to your tables.

We deserve what we get because we voted for it. Off the cliff we go. Everyone knew there was a fiscal deadline. Just fall off the cliff and be done with it. None of us should cry about it now. It’s what we voted for, after all.

I feel like there should be public outcry about the way the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy is being handled. Many of these people are living without heat and without electricity for two week now. Some have not received supplies. If there was more of a public outcry, then these people would be getting their emergency help a lot sooner. I believe our government should be paying more attention.

I take umbrage with a Speak Out comment regarding marijuana use leading to cocaine and heroin addiction. This is a ridiculous statement. More states are legalizing marijuana. It’s no more dangerous than alcohol. As a youth I smoked my share of weed. It never led to any other substance abuse.

Palos Park

“Of the people by the people and for the people” should be changed to “of the politicians by the politicians and for the politicians.” If we the people don’t change this soon, we will be rioting in the streets just like Greece.
