While turkey is the dish most associated with Thanksgiving, a big meal isn't the only way to mark the holiday. | File photo

Whatever you do for Thanksgiving, I hope it brings joy into your life. For those who are missing loved ones no longer with us, I hope your good memories of them bring you comfort during this tough time.
No one is saying that everyone who smokes pot will end up on hard drugs. But the evidence cannot be denied, either, that most people who end up on hard drugs do indeed start out smoking pot. It does, indeed, often end up being a gateway drug in some cases.
To Don from Burbank: Be careful what you wish for. Not using turn signals is annoying, but good driving is being very aware of other drivers. Besides, I think police already make much more than they should in traffic court at our expense. I’ve seen a police officer spend his day watching local traffic from obscure places or at the Markham courthouse. The average ticket plus court costs is more than $250 from what I’ve seen. Also, it seems like the typical defendant is a minority. Slow down and observe all traffic rules especially if you are of color.

If some entity calls your phone number and proceeds with a recording, that is an illegal robocall. Hang up. For older folks who get up to answer the phone just to hear a recording, consider the cable TV services that provide a display of the incoming number and name of the caller on your TV screen. It won’t stop the calls, but at least you don’t have to get up to answer them.
I do not begrudge a war veteran being recognized when he or she returns, preferably alive. My husband is a Vietnam vet and my nephew is a vet of the Iraq War. I do not appreciate the assumption that firefighters die because they are out of shape. Just as I would not make suppositions about veterans, I don’t think assumptions should be made about firefighters who die on the job. I am a proud retired firefighter and belong to a three-generation firefighter family. Walk a mile in my shoes for a while and see how you feel.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney stated he lost the election due to gifts promised. He is absolutely correct. I think the ongoing gift of 1 percenters not paying their fair share of taxes was part of his agenda that was rejected by the voters.
I expect to see several comments blaming workers for the Hostess Brands bankruptcy. It’s unfortunate that we continue to blame workers. I read that former chief executive officer Brian Driscoll gave himself a 300 percent raise and top executives were given large raises. Hostess has been suffering from low sales and poor management, yet the CEO was rewarded with a raise. There is no money for workers, but there is plenty to go around for top executives. Does that sound right to you? The workers are fighting for fair wages and pensions. Folks, low wages are killing the middle class.
While I was watching the news about the ethics investigation involving U.S. Rep Jesse Jackson Jr. it was said that his wife, Chicago Ald. Sandi Jackson, is a paid campaign consultant. Had he married my wife he would have had her advice and opinions, whether they were wanted or not, for free. The amusing thing is this entire investigation centers around someone who was raised by a minister, the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
If Illinois House Minority Leader Tom Cross and Gov. Pat Quinn want to eliminate the cost-of-living increases for new employees just coming into employment, then that’s one thing. That would be the deal they would sign up for. But to pull the rug out from under us who have already retired and are counting on that cost-of-living increase is downright cruel and criminal. This is what we were promised. This is what we paid into. I made my decision to retire with that very much in mind. I need that cost-of-living increase or I just will not make it.
What is the big deal about David Petraeus? I certainly do not condone his affair with Paula Broadwell, but a known philanderer and liar was re-elected as our commander in chief back in the 1990s. What was his name? Slick Willie or something like that. It was just more smoke screen to hide more serious issues during President Clinton’s time in office.

The power of unregulated commerce has grown to destroy our families, our values and the fabric of interdependent society. The union bakers at Hostess Brands have sacrificed for their principles and for the dignity of all workers. They deserve the same respect given to our Armed Forces. In solidarity, shoppers should boycott stores open on Thanksgiving Day and not buy resurrected Hostess products made cheaply elsewhere because I think those products will not be cheaper for consumers and America.
From what I’ve seen, you are not allowed to be atheist or agnostic in Muslim countries. I think you also are not allowed to be gay in Muslim countries either. I believe they would kill you in certain Muslim countries if they caught you. Some people seem to say bad things about Christianity all the time, but these same atheists or gay people seem to say nothing about Islam.
Movie, TV, sports and recording stars should be taxed at a higher rate than others. They obviously have enough money to buy expensive and extravagant mansions, cars and vacations that most people cannot afford. They should have enough money to pay a higher tax rate and benefit the rest of society in a more positive way.
