Some people joke that there are only two seasons in the Chicago area: construction and winter. | File photo

I’m really tired of all this construction. Maybe it wouldn’t be so annoying if it stopped for a while. But in Chicago and surrounding areas there always seems to be a street torn up.
Assuming the casino expansion bill is passed by the Illinois Legislature and signed into law, Country Club Hills Mayor Dwight Welch is already proclaiming victory over four other south suburban communities, stating that Country Club Hills is going to get the casino because it is their time. The mayor is proposing the development of a $250 million casino and hotel, which would create about 250 jobs during the construction phase. This all sounds wonderful. However, the question that still remains unanswered is whether Country Club Hills will be able to pass the state-required gambling smell test.
I think mastiffs are not like other dogs. From what I’ve seen they bond to one person. They don’t like other dogs in a group. You have to watch them carefully. They don’t like change. They are not aggressive but they are very intimidated by certain situations. This might cause them to lash out.
Wisdom comes with age, whether you like it to or not. I think people in their 30s should not be allowed to vote.

State Rep. Derrick Smith could serve one year in office because a judge set his trial for Oct. 21. This is ridiculous and abuses our system of law and order. Smith was arrested by the FBI and charged with felony bribery. What kind of law system are we running in Illinois? This man allegedly took a bribe from an FBI informant. Now we have to pay Smith for one year before we can dump this trash into a prison.
Maybe former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. should get a hold of New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann, who is the king of disability. Maybe they can get together and compare notes and see how Jackson Jr. can get a big check for disability or Social Security. When I’m 65 years old and I call up for my Social Security they will probably say they ran out of money.
A lot of Speak Out commenters are upset about the results of the last election. I can only say to live with it. It happened. You need to accept it and go on. The United States needs to come together as a country so we can move forward. Stop whining and either get with the program or get out of the way.
Once again Homer Glen voters voted for higher taxes, more stupid rules and a blank check to village officials. This is one of the reasons I got out of politics in Homer Glen. I think people may be book smart, but they are brain-dead. The wording of the referendum was not right and confusing to many people. That is why they voted for it or not at all. This was a very important matter. Brace yourself, people. You are all going to pay dearly.
If you listened to all this stuff in the media you’d think 50 percent of the population was gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual or whatever. It is not. We are hurting our children by promoting what I think is garbage as an alternative normal lifestyle. Most kids are not gay. Stop pushing the gay agenda.
I see Chicago has passed its 2013 city budget, but they pushed back the pension funds that are lacking for the firemen and policemen and blame Springfield for not acting. Why should Springfield act? I think Chicago is the one that took out these funds illegally in the first place. Let them figure it out.
I believe now more than ever that a third party is needed in United States.

I’m a retired senior citizen who has worked all my life trying to be at least middle class like everyone else should do. I should have given up a long time ago. I should be on public aid. I should have taken everything free from our government.

People need to be careful on the highways now while going through the forest preserves because the deer are in the rut. This means the male deer are in their mating season. They will go through fire to get to a female. They are really crashing through windows and doors. The deer don’t know any better. Be very careful.
There is an old saying: “You can get a ham sandwich indicted in front of a grand jury.” After viewing the local election results, you can get a ham sandwich elected to public office here in Illinois.
I want those people with the “proud union home” signs in front of their house to go over to all the people who lost their jobs at Hostess Brands and take care of them now. Those workers had those signs in front of their homes too. Now they don’t have jobs, but they have a “proud union home” sign. Way to go!
There is a lot of finger-pointing from both political sides. I think the Republican Party lost because they are out of touch. That is the bottom line. We need compromise, not all of this one-sided talk.
Congratulations to Lake County Judge Brian Hughes for not throwing Mark Ditka, son of former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka, in jail for testing positive for a controlled substance during a routine pretrial screening. I guess Da Coach has everybody in his pocket. Da Bears!
I cannot believe the people re-elected President Obama after four years of failure. Ask the millions of unemployed people if it was the right thing to do. Teachers, firefighters and other government employees will be better off, but the people in general will not.
