I hope Ballet 5:8’s inaugural production, “The Carpenter’s Son,” is just the beginning of many performances. The faith-based ballet company sounds like just what the Southland needs.
Tinley Park has done a great job decorating downtown for Christmas. I took my grandkids. They enjoyed it. It was beautiful.
Ken from Oak Forest
With President Obama and Congress locked in talks over the fiscal cliff, I tend to think of it more like a kamikaze, or “divine wind.” The only thing is the divine wind coming out of Washington, D.C., stinks.
John from Bridgeport
Let me get this straight. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs takes a whole industry and moves it to Asia where he gets cheap labor, brings the product back here and makes enormous profits. When he dies we eulogize him in the newspapers for months. Everyone thinks that is OK. But a fallen firefighter or police officer who gets a couple of days in the newspapers gets a bunch of people complaining about all the praise that person is getting. A firefighter deserves just as much respect or more than Jobs. All Jobs did was make a lot of money for himself.
We are in such a mess in this state of Illinois. It’s all because of the politicians. They made the laws that have put us billions in debt. They do not care about the common people. All they care about is themselves and their pensions. When they leave office they are not held accountable for anything. We are all doomed in this state. The only thing we can do is move out of Illinois. But how is that going to work out for you when you try to sell your home these days?
Pat from Monee
I hope people looking for a pet during this Christmas season will visit their local animal shelter. Please do not buy from a pet shop. If you are inclined to buy from a pet shop, please be aware there is a law in effect called the pet store disclosure bill. You should have access to any information about any dog in that shop prior to purchase. Some will tell you that you are not entitled to that information or they will not give it to you. You should report this to the Department of Agriculture and your local police department.
The demise of the Twinkie as we know it is here. But all the manufacturers need to do is use the same formula and add vitamins and caffeine. What will emerge is Twinkies Plus. Health-food stores would clamor for this product with its name recognition. Fannie May made a comeback. The infamous Twinkie can do the same. Through the years there was never a recall of Hostess Brands products. Hostess employees should be commended for their exemplary reputation.
Bernadine from Palos Heights
There is a difference between fibbers and liars. I’m a fibber. A politician or a lawyer are liars.
Rich from Orland Park
More in response to Grace from Mount Greenwood’s comment that all policemen and firemen risk their lives daily: Everyone who works does not somehow get around the laws by taking greater than their fair share from their neighbors, and they are important to society. Policemen and firemen and very well-trained to do their job safely and are very well-paid. They all knew ahead of time what the job entailed. Get off it! None of these people were drafted against their will to perform these jobs. It is only a job, nothing else. No one person is greater than anyone else.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle has stated that black people and Latinos disproportionately fill our prison cells. Has she ever thought that perhaps black people and Latinos disproportionately commit the majority of crimes? I am so tired of hearing this same argument about how jails are the intersection of racism and poverty. I agree with the poverty part. But people bring on this stuff themselves.
There are some citizens who are laid off or who have lost their job who now depend on government assistance in order to feed their children or to pay bills. Some people depend on the Link card just to get by. I have been working since I was 16 years old. I am a taxpayer. Just because I’ve been laid off does not mean I’m a freeloader, lazy, scamming the system or anything else people have been complaining about.
Former U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds stated that everyone deserves a second chance. Not you, Mr. Reynolds. You had a chance and you blew it. Anyone who takes advantage of an underage girl gets just what they deserve. Just go away.
BJ from Hazel Crest
A Speak Out commenter said losing your memory is a blessing in disguise because you can go to the same vacation spot every year and it’s a new experience because you don’t remember. This person has a very sick sense of humor, if you want to call it that. I had three relatives and a close friend who died due to Alzheimer’s disease.
Pete from Chicago
A community will never change and move forward if its foundation is built upon how much it is given and not how much it has earned.
John from Oak Lawn
Why are professional boxers, who have fought numerous bouts in a vicious sport, not claiming concussions like all the football and hockey players? Boxers take the most punishment of all the contact sports. Sometimes they can take 60 or more blows to the head yet I haven’t read or heard of these gladiators crying concussions all the time. Figure that one out.
Why is it when people talk about illegal immigrants they seem to think illegal immigrants are only from Mexico? Immigrants, illegal or not, are from all over.
