Way to go, Hickory Creek Middle School sixth-graders! I think the Cesar E. Chavez Multicultural Academic Center students who benefited from your efforts had quite the Christmas thanks to you.

I get the feeling that some people want President Obama to fail so they can say, “You see. I told you he couldn’t run the country.”

The National Rifle Association’s response to school shootings is to put armed guards in all of the schools. Schools have to cut programs because they can’t afford it. The police departments are stretched beyond their limits with their budgets. Cities are filing bankruptcy and struggling to pay their bills. We are supposed to pay millions for armed guards in schools? Instead of shoving millions down the pockets of the politicians, why don’t they foot the bill? They are a big cause of this mess. Let them clean it up. No one needs assault rifles except the police and the military.

Janice from Oak Lawn

If a person has two brain cells to rub together then you must realize that the two convicts who escaped must have had inside help at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. These two guys used the Three Stooges plan to escape and tied who knows how many bedsheets (which they shouldn’t have had access to) together, to drop 17 stories down. Where were the cameras and outside security? Whoever was supposed to be monitoring the system must have been watching the Three Stooges.

Alsip Joe

Thank you to the person who paid for my breakfast Dec. 23 at Olympic Star Restaurant in Tinley Park. I hope you had a blessed Christmas and a happy new year.

Ann from Orland Park

Forget about all the shady characters, rookies and amateurs who want the 2nd Congressional District seat that former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. held. We need a real professional like former U.S. Sen. Roland Burris to go for it. Come on, Roland. Step up.

Dennis from Oak Forest

I think the radical Tea Party Republicans in Congress are holding the United States hostage because their only allegiance is to their wealthy lords. They are willing to sacrifice the well-being of millions of Americans. Everyone will see a tax increase. Unfortunately, the people at the lower ends of the economic spectrum are least able to cope with it. We have to throw these guys out.

What do the tragedies at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Columbine High School and the everyday shootings in Chicago all have in common? I know your first answer is going to be guns. But no, the main thing they have in common are parents who refuse to admit that their kids are troubled.

I just got my property tax increase bill from Cook County. Usually when you have to pay more for something, then that means you are getting better quality or you are getting better services. Unfortunately we are paying more for the same old corruption, dirty politics and crooked politicians.

Steve from Evergreen Park

Ask not for whom the bell tolls. The bell tolls for thee, for no man is an island. Yes, there was a young man in Connecticut who pulled the trigger that killed those young children. But each one of us must assume our own responsibility to that act when we allow these kinds of video games, movies and entertainment on television. We must accept our own responsibility because we are the ones who made it possible for this young man to go on to this craze. Are the kinds of weapons he had necessary in the hands of common people?

Who will be the next Democratic congressman from the 2nd Congressional District? It will be whoever fits on Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan’s hand the best. All they are going to be is another one of Madigan’s hand puppets. Madigan says, “Jump,” and all the Illinois politicians ask, “How high?”

Ed from Monee

To those who believe God is never around when tragedy strikes: God gave to all the freedom of free choice. With this we all are allowed to choose right or wrong. God does not renege on his promises. With this free choice we all must one day chose him or Satan to determine your destination. Don’t blame God. Blame the one making the wrong choice.

Marge from Crest Hill

A Speak Out commenter stated that people who wear pajamas outside look stupid. Maybe people have to wear pajamas sometimes. Back in the summer I had surgery. I couldn’t go outside of the house for quite some time. When I was able to, pajamas were the only thing I could wear that was comfortable. After two months of being in the house I was finally happy to get some fresh air. Think before you make a comment.

I wonder if U.S. House Speaker John Boehner went to the Cayman Islands with his billionaire buddies for the holidays. Then they could have sat and counted their tax-free money that they earned.

A Speak Out commenter asked where God was when 26 children and adults were massacred at Sandy Hook Elementary School. I hope this person realizes that God is not allowed in school anymore.

Good wishes for future innovative survival construction to New York, New Jersey and California-dreaming people who have to or want to continue businesses and homes near ocean-coastal areas. Hurricanes like Andrew, Katrina and Irene were early red flags. Being next to Lake Michigan in Chicago is kind of like being in a coastal city. Concerning national weather and the fiscal situation: Chicken Little might say, “Watch the sky for a lot more snow and a falling cliff.”
