When tragedies like the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings happen, people come together. The spirit of community seen at the Oak Lawn candlelight vigil for the victims was comforting.
Thank you to the woman who gave me a bouquet of flowers at the New Lenox Jewel on Nelson Road. While I thanked you and hugged you, I’m sorry I didn’t get your name and invite you to my home. Happy new year.

It is nice that this grandmother’s four out of five granddaughters succeeded in Catholic schools. I still believe upbringing has much to do with it. We forget it is not the teachers’ job to raise our children right. Most people cannot afford private schools but have children go on to the same professions. My son was in public school and won first in state for fire science. He is halfway through college to be an emergency medical technician.
Regarding Da Bears 2013: Enough already with Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith aka “Mr. Rogers.” He had to go. What is needed is another Da Coach-type leader. Nine years of Lovie has run its course. No hard feelings, Mr. Smith. You could go to Washington.

The more talk there is about banning assault weapons, the more assault weapons that are being sold. The gun dealers are making out like a bandit.
Someone commented that President Obama is fueling class conflict. That’s not true. If revenues are not increased, programs important to the poor and middle class will be cut. How could you want Medicaid cut for a child that doesn’t have health insurance? I pray for parents with sick kids that do not have health care. I believe doctors should make millions. Instead, it is the hedge fund managers, equity firm managers, chief executive officers and bankers that are making millions. What do they contribute to society? Yes, I think these guys should be paying a higher tax rate than me.
I think gay marriage is wrong. That’s all there is to it. Nature made it that straight is natural. It takes a male and female to naturally reproduce in humans. That’s all there is to it. Science, biology and physiology support man and woman.
Am I the only one who is disgusted and angry with our legislators? They had months to solve the fiscal cliff. But no, they couldn’t be Americans and do what is right in a timely fashion. They had to be only a Democrat or Republican strutting around like peacocks hardly doing anything. What did they achieve this whole session? I have but one senator and no representative to complain to. Don’t forget to add President Obama to the pot. I heard he went six weeks without meeting with legislative leaders. It’s a shame. Thanks a lot, Washington, D.C.
The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is to arm a good guy with a gun. This is the answer according to the National Rifle Association. They blame everyone in sight except themselves.
It’s a sad day in Orland Park when the extension cords that light up your outside holiday decorations are stolen.
Regarding 2012 crime, etc., in Tinley Park: Tinley Park needs not only an image adjustment but looking around, it also needs a face-lift.
Guns aren’t the problem. Our politically correct society is. There’s no longer any respect for life or the Ten Commandments. If everyone respected them, we would be better off. But no, the religion haters say we cannot use them as a guide for our society. What’s right is right and what’s wrong is wrong. We no longer care about the difference. The free love and “it’s all about me” generation of 1960s flower children has come home to roost. We are all going to pay for it. I am from that age but can see the flower for the trees.
Happy new year to all and a safe and healthy year to all. Thanks to Speak Out for letting us voice our opinions all year.
Chicago Bears fans should be proud of their team. The Bears have the best record of any team that did not make the playoffs.
If you are among those blaming the National Rifle Association for the tragedy in Connecticut, you should put blame where it belongs: on our legal system. I heard that with plea bargaining the average time served for murder in Illinois may be as little as four years. Repeat offenders have nothing to fear as Illinois no longer has the death penalty.
I do not agree that the Cook County and Will County police departments should be eliminated. They patrol and serve unincorporated areas and some incorporated towns. Although their numbers are few and they are widely dispersed, they are very much needed in these areas. And they assist local police when necessary.
About politicians: Many postings appear in Speak Out, almost on a daily basis, critical of the political process in general and specific politicians in particular. In the terrible mess we are in nationally and in the state of Illinois for sure, I think we need to turn to the philosopher Plato, who said: “One of the penalties of not participating in politics is that you will be governed by your inferiors.”
Regarding assault rifles: The difference between John Public and a police officer can be summed up in one simple word.: trained.
