Flu shots are in high demand given how hard the flu has hit the Chicago area this winter. | File photo

I just wanted to say to all you people who did not get a flu shot: Shame on you. Now that the flu is widespread, it is too late, and it is your own fault.
The Republicans were upset with President Obama for criticizing them for waiting until the last minute and going down to the wire with the fiscal cliff negotiation. They sure can dish it out to him but when the tables are turned, they just can’t take it.
We bought a new vehicle from Grossinger Kia in Lincolnwood. Val Ianev was our salesman. We saved $2,000 more on our trade-in and got a new tow hitch installed. The hitch wasn’t in stock. I was having back surgery the following week so Val took care of getting it installed when it came in. He came to our home with a loaner vehicle with a full tank of gasoline and took ours to the dealer. The next evening, he drove back to our house with our vehicle washed and filled the gas tank. That is definitely going above and beyond.
A new year begins and a new round of commercials for cancer walks begins as well. These walks are months away and still we’re being inundated. How much money that could have been used for cancer research is being wasted in this manner?

Who said there is no free lunch? If you truly want to stop illegal immigration, then there should be no more handouts like free housing, groceries and other things.

I don’t wear makeup. If I want to look natural that is my choice. While I tidy up, no, I don’t wear my jammies in public.
I’m a longtime subscriber to the SouthtownStar, and I’m very very disappointed how your sports section is published each day. I do not think it is sports editor Phil Arvia’s fault. Do we really need all this high school sports coverage?
Apparently, former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. is the only criminal worth commenting about in Speak Out every day. Give Jesse Jackson Jr. a rest. There’s plenty of other prominent criminals. Just flip through your newspaper daily.
To Ken from Frankfort: Christmas decorations will always stay up ’til Jan. 6th, the Epiphany, at my house. I celebrate the 12 days of Christmas. I am disappointed with those who go dark upon Christmas Day.

Regarding the Bowl Championship Series blowout: We are given a special Irish pullout section because the University of Notre Dame is in the BCS championship. The next day, the rout by the University of Alabama over ND is only mentioned on Page 27. This is a phenomenal example of the hype Notre Dame gets. They should never have been ranked as No. 1. That’s why they lost. What No. 1 team goes into the playoffs expected to lose in the double digits? They certainly aren’t “God’s team or “the team of destiny.” We all have God on our side. Sheesh!
I think the job fairs that local governments are having are a big joke. All that happens is you are given forms to fill out and the politicians get their pictures taken like they are doing something useful. I believe nothing results from these job fairs and they are simply photo ops for clueless politicians.
We have armed officers protecting the entrances to government buildings, so why is it called insanity to suggest having armed officers protecting the entrances to our government schools? Some have suggested teachers should just wear emergency alarm pendants to contact the police instead. It is truly insane to think that a bad guy with a gun is just going to stand there and wait for the police to arrive. Why does it not make more sense to have an armed officer at the door to stop a gunman from ever getting into the school in the first place?
Regarding more comments about the Link card: You get mad at poor people, but you should be angry at these corporations that do not pay a livable wage. Get angry that we subsidize these low wages. Get angry at the wealthy who hide their money overseas. Get angry at the billions we give away in subsidies to wealthy oil companies. Get angry that our current tax laws allow companies to get tax breaks for shipping jobs overseas. Get angry at the greedy corporations that are shipping jobs overseas. Expand your knowledge beyond a Link card.
Regardless of where you stand on the political spectrum, there is no denying that this government has added trillions of dollars in debt over the past four years. Not only that, but they have added a huge program called Obamacare that I think is going to run the debt up even more. These bills are going to have to be paid. They say it’s going to be our children and grandchildren who are going to be saddled with this debt, but it’s us too. They are going to have to raise our taxes now.
To the person who blamed 2-month-old Aaliyah Geminas’ death on the behavior of women: Really? Unless this was an immaculate conception, Aaliyah had a father. How is this only her mother’s fault? Was her dad there to care for her? The problem is adequate education. We need to teach young people to respect themselves and each other, understand their bodies and feelings, prevent unwanted pregnancy, and understand the huge commitment of parenthood. The murder of this child is a tragedy. The murderer is reprehensible. What goes around comes around. What is going around is ignorance due to lack of education.
