It’s too bad it was so cold for the Eskimo Open Golf Tournament at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club in Lemont. At least golfers like Max Campbell and his father, Mark, came up with ways to keep warm.
About saving our tax money: Mr. Steve Eberhardt brought up some very good and expensive points in his recent Forum letter. Before the endless supply of revenue to our governments at all levels began drying up, we had no idea of the perks we have been paying for with our tax dollars. Taxpayers can no longer afford them. It is where lots of cutting back can begin.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is having a fit because the federal appeals court rightly struck down the anti-concealed-carry law. We have some of the most violent crime in the United States, namely in the city of Chicago. Why doesn’t Mayor Emanuel and those other do-gooders wake up and realize the problem is not the guns? The problem is the people. These people have no morals. They feel like everybody owes them something. They get their guns illegally. This is the problem. It’s the poor attitude.
What is the sense of ABC-TV (Channel 7) having the pregame for the national Bowl Championship Series between the Universities of Notre Dame and Alabama if the game was going to be shown on ESPN on cable?
Why do lawmakers make a big deal out of signing laws during a lame-duck session? Is it because they know their constituents don’t want the laws passed so outgoing politicians pass laws with a promise of a reward after they are gone. Lawyers, used car salesmen and politicians. They’re all on my “Do not trust this person” list.

This is to the people who say, “Let gay people marry. Love is love. Who are we to judge?”: Really? How about child marriage? Plenty of Third World countries marry off little girls to men, and I’m sure they would say they’re in love. Why not people and animals? People really love their pets. I think there’s no difference. Male and female is the nature-created right way. I believe gay people want marriage to legitimize their abnormality. Let’s stop the madness and use our nature-given brains. Gay marriage is wrong.
The Republicans are becoming a Southern party. The hurricanes in the South have received the aid they need yet U.S. House leaders have dragged their feet to help New York and New Jersey, which are both blue states. Politics are being played with people’s livelihoods.

Who made the Ebenezer Scrooge from Frankfort an expert on when Christmas decorations should be removed? The lights are cheerful in the darkness of winter. They remind us that the Christmas spirit is still alive and well. It is surely more attractive than the political and union signs on lawns throughout the year. We also recommend this person get a pair of rose-colored glasses for eyesores.
I’m 70 years old. I wear sweatpants and a T-shirt when I go out. I can do that. I remember when men opened car doors and made enough money so their wives could stay home and take care of the children. I can’t afford to have my hair done all the time. Who cares how you look? It’s who you are inside. Don’t look at people who wear pajamas if you don’t like it.
How has the legalization-of-gay-marriage movement spiraled out of control? I think we have moved to the point of being a fair and equitable America as far as allowing civil unions for gay people and lesbians without any discrimination. Nevertheless, I strongly oppose Illinois House Bill 5170 to legalize gay marriage on the basis that it is morally and intrinsically wrong. It violates the laws of God and nature. I may be old school, but this threatens the already shaky foundation of this country.

If a student were to show up at school drunk or on drugs they would surely face suspension. Johnny Holmes continues to sit on the Community High School District 218 board despite a recent DUI arrest. When a board member gets a DUI, what happens? Apparently nothing. It seems like there are no consequences. I suppose this is what passes for fairness in the administration in District 218. I wonder what the students think.
Hammond, Ind., and the border towns of Indiana should erect a statue in honor of our Gov. Pat Quinn. He will not allow casinos to be built in Illinois and the price of cigarettes are steadily going up. I think all of the tax money is going to Indiana. Illinois cannot even afford to pay the retirees their pensions. Gov. Quinn is the greatest tax help for Indiana.
Maybe chief executive officers should not be receiving multimillion-dollar paychecks while workers get pay and benefit cuts. Corporations should not get tax breaks for outsourcing. I think our tax laws are written for the 1 percent and corporations. The unemployed are out looking for jobs. They are not just sitting around.
It’s quite obvious that it doesn’t take any knowledge nowadays to get your driver’s license. The people seem to never remember the part about where you are not supposed to drive in someone’s blind spot or right next to another car. That’s just common sense. What if you have to possibly swerve for whatever reason? How are you going to swerve if you have someone driving right next to you in the roadway?
Kids need to learn that when they anger adults there is going to be a consequence and a bad one, so they stop doing that. Let’s use some common sense. Sometimes anger is correct.
