Phil Kadner’s column “The vision behind a ‘Field of Dreams’ ” had me crying. It was outstanding to read his thoughts about Mike and Denise Stillman’s plans for the movie site.
If every senator and representative had the determination and fortitude of U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, then many of the problems in Washington, D.C., could be settled or close to being resolved. Mr. Kirk has set the bar high. I hope his fellow colleagues see what results can be accomplished with steadfast determination. Welcome back, from your Illinois constituents.

I just hope whoever the new Chicago Bears head coach is that he remembers to beat the Green Bay Packers, the Minnesota Vikings and the give-me games against the Detroit Lions. I don’t care if the Bears go 6-10 for the season as long as we beat our very beatable division opponents. A 6-10 season where we beat our division and miss the playoffs is just as good as a 10-6 season where we miss the playoffs.
Congratulations to President Obama. He is the first Democrat since President Franklin Roosevelt to win at least 51 percent of the popular vote back to back.
Are these illegal immigrants going to learn to read and speak English to get these driver’s licenses?
As a couple who enjoys dining out, we noticed an alarming trend. Some restaurants started charging additional for an extra salad dressing or extra ranch sauce. One Homer Glen restaurant did so recently for my grandsons to dip their chicken fingers in. What’s next? A charge for salt or pepper or crushed pepper for my pizza? There are too many restaurants in Orland Park and surrounding areas to put up with this. Maybe we need a website about which restaurants added these charges and which ones don’t let you know there is an extra charge until you get the bill.
It’s the typical Illinois government way. I think Illinois’ pension problem came from the government by taking all of the pension money for other things, and now it’s gone. You can be sure if the individuals didn’t put in their fair share of the pension money then the government would chase them down to the ends of the Earth until they paid what they owed. So let the government pay up what they owe.
I think the Catholic Church should no longer be tax-exempt in America. If Cardinal Francis George decides that he wants to be political and dip his foot in the pool of politics, then the Catholic Church can pay taxes like every one of us do. Perhaps this can be the cardinal’s calling for a second career now that he will possibly be retiring as a cardinal of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

A Speak Out commenter complained about crime in Tinley Park and stated that it needs a face-lift. Why don’t you go live in some other south suburban community for a while and then come back? Realize how lucky you are to live in Tinley Park. I’ve lived in a few other communities. Believe me when I say Tinley Park is a wonderful place to live. God bless Mayor Ed Zabrocki and all of the people running the village. Please continue to make this a family-friendly community.

To all of the Democrats and Republicans like President Obama and U.S. House Speaker John Boehner: They keep touting their efforts to avoid the fiscal cliff. This is your job. Stop acting like you just saved the world. This should be done every year. You guys are pitiful. When are people going to wake up and start putting people in office who know what they are doing instead of typical Democrats and Republicans? These people are a joke. They have taken us for a ride.

I see more comments from vicious and uninformed union haters in Speak Out. Maybe they should look into the history of the United States when we didn’t have unions. Even now the unions are very weak. The large corporations are getting away with not paying their taxes. They are the real problem, not the so-called 1 percent. Unions are dealing with companies that are putting all of their money overseas and taking the jobs there as well.
I wish WLS-TV (Channel 7) news co-anchor Linda Yu would stop complaining about the weather. If she doesn’t like it being cold in Chicago, then get her out of here. I think she is a goof and she doesn’t need to be on the show.
Why has the SouthtownStar’s circulation numbers dropped off in recent years? I think it’s because more than half of that daily newspaper is high school sports. I am not interested in high school sports that take up half of the newspaper. If it wasn’t for that section, then I think the SouthtownStar would consist of 12 pages per day. Somebody should get smart and realize that there is not enough news happening in this area to publish a daily newspaper. Get smart. Publish the news, not a high school rah-rah section.
Not one of 22 candidates running for former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.’s 2nd Congressional District seat have mentioned anything about how they are going to stop the violence and killing in the streets. When one of them can bring that up and they can solve it, maybe then the people will vote for them. The people are just tired of all the politicians because every time you turn around they are in our pockets and trying to hurt us. It happens in Springfield as well as Washington, D.C. People are fed up with politicians.
