In this Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012 photo, Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith stands on the sidelines before the first quarter of an NFL football game against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field in Detroit. The Chicago Bears fired Smith after nine seasons on Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, parting ways with a coach who led them to a Super Bowl but also oversaw late collapses the past two seasons. The dismissal with one year left on his contract comes after Chicago missed the playoffs for the fifth time in six seasons. (AP Photo/Duane Burleson)

To whichever team eventually hires former Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith: I wish you well and many 9-7 seasons to come.
Has Community High School District 218 made a decision about board member Johnny Holmes, who was charged a second time with DUI? Do they still want to keep him on the board as a role model for the students?
Gov. Pat Quinn will go down in Illinois history as the Benedict Arnold of capital punishment. When he abolished the death penalty he also commuted the sentences of 14 of the most vicious, murderous, sadistic and inhuman prisoners. There is no evidence that these 14 men were wrongfully convicted. Protecting the innocent and delivering justice for victims is why Illinois still needs the death penalty. Restore the death penalty and get rid of Quinn.
Getting the flu shot is like betting on 12 numbers on a roulette wheel. Even some doctors say you have a 33 percent chance to catch the flu even after the shot. Some say the flu shot is useless for older people. A Speak Out commenter seemed to berate us for not getting a flu shot. He made it seem like we caused the massive outbreak. I’ve never received a flu shot and never got sick. Maybe blame the person who sneezed on you for getting you sick instead of barking at us.
Christmas decorations stay up at our house until Jan. 13, the feast day commemorating the baptism of Jesus. That’s the official end of the Christmas season. If stores didn’t decorate in September, then the Christmas season wouldn’t seem so long.

The 11th-ranked St. Xavier University women’s basketball team upset the sixth-ranked team from Olivet Nazarene University, and the 23rd-ranked St. Xavier men’s team also won. As I looked in the SouthtownStar’s sports section I saw nothing about St. Xavier or any local college team. I think the local colleges of St. Xavier University, Moraine Valley Community College, Trinity Christian College, South Suburban College, Governors State University, Lewis University and the University of St. Francis deserve a little more coverage than a once-in-a-while two lines at the bottom of a page.

Do we want our children to grow up to think that everybody has to be carrying a gun to protect them? Who is going to pay for all of these police officers? Everybody is complaining about the cost of property taxes. This would have to be paid for by all of us. We would have to be paying additional property taxes to afford all of these police officers.
Now that former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and former Chicago Ald. Sandi Jackson have ended their political seats, the pressure must really be mounting. They say it’s because of health issues, but I think it’s an indictment issue. Even the Rev. Jesse Jackson hasn’t had his fingers in on this one, so something must be up for him not to have his 2 cents to say.

The Second Amendment is an antiquated decree that should be amended to conform to current society. We are no longer in the dark ages.

I think it’s great the SouthtownStar expanded its high school sports coverage. The kids deserve it. I’m disappointed that when they made this move they dropped De La Salle Institute from the coverage. I was told it’s because the students are not in the coverage area.

The city of Chicago doesn’t seem to have enough money to pay the retirees. Does that go for the ex-mayors, ex-police chiefs and all of the former big shots, or is this for all of the guys who go out there and work their butts off every day?
A number of people commented in Speak Out about illegal immigrants who come to the United States and how now they are getting this or that benefit. You must realize this is a Democratic ploy to get votes. I think this is how they intend to expand their voting base. There is not a lot we can do about it other than quit voting Democratic and start voting some of these people out of office. We have immigration laws that everyone has followed. They should be followed now.

I wonder if anyone else is getting sick of certain TV commercials that have been played over and over and over again. Commercials like Empire Today, Luna, AT&T’s ads with the disgusting tweens, Menards, Walter E. Smithe custom furniture and United Auto Insurance with Eddie & JoBo. The radio commercials include Penny Mustard furniture and Kars4Kids. I wish they would just tone these down and not have so many of them every day. It’s driving me up the wall.
Pete Rose and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson broke the rules and were banned from baseball because of it. The guys who used steroids cheated. In my opinion cheating is, by far ,worse than betting on baseball games, which isn’t good either. Cheaters shouldn’t be allowed in the Baseball Hall of Fame. You have to keep the game honest and true.
The government did not hire new doctors, but they could hire 16,000 new IRS employees and force you to participate in Obamacare. Is this the America we had just five years ago? No, I think this government is unconstitutional. It reminds me of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler’s projects. Do you have the guts to object to it?
