Who’s excited about the new season of TV juggernaut “American Idol” and the new judges? I’m looking forward to seeing how far Country Club Hills’ Clifton Duffin goes in the competition.
Any politician who votes to take guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens by denying us our Second Amendment rights should automatically forfeit their armed bodyguards that the taxpayers probably provide for them. If regular citizens cannot protect themselves then why should we pay for politicians to be protected?
Regarding the majority opposing same-sex marriage: Recent polls show that may no longer be true. The majority used to think owning slaves was OK. Some laws said husbands could beat their wives except on Sunday. Sometimes laws and the majority are wrong. I’m thankful for our Constitution and judicial system. Within certain limits, people have a right to be different. Some religions and societies have tried to stamp out homosexuality for millennia. It seems to be here to stay and we should all have the same basic rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

About CBS Sports’ Tom Lemming saying LaquonTreadwell owes a lot to Crete-Monee High School coach Jerry Verde: Get off the bandwagon. Verde was handed a 5-star athlete by the University Park Lions’ coaches. Laquon was going to be who he is with or without Verde. I think Laquon got better from hard work and training along with the men who volunteered to help him during the off-season. It should be Verde thanking the boys he used to help him get his state title so he could go back to Marian Catholic High School where he wanted to be.
The Pentagon’s budget has risen over the past 10 years. We have invested in things like the F-35 Lightning II jet fighter or its other name, the solid gold lemon in the sky. This is just one example of the rampant waste in the defense department. We could easily cut 25 percent and have an even stronger defense but only if we had elected officials with common sense and integrity. Instead, our elected officials are puppets for the for-profit military industrial complex. We are slaves to the masters of war.

The Link card debate goes on. My wife is a nurse at two hospitals, one near Chicago’s Brighton Park community and the other near Posen. At any time she can buy Link cards from some of her fellow nurses. These nurses’ families would rather have cash so some nurses bring these Link cards to work to sell. So don’t think that everyone you see is using that card for free. Some pay for these Link cards and just get a nice discount on their hard-earned money that they are taxed on.
In this tough economy, everyone should be pulling their fair share. I think parents who have children in school receiving the free food program should not mind contributing at least $5 per month to help their school. This money could pay for paper towels, soap and so forth. A school with 500 children would bring in $2,500 per month.

High school sports are real sports unlike the professional millionaire sports. High school sports are the major reason why people buy the SouthtownStar. Keep up the good work.

I’m on the National Do Not Call Registry but still get unwanted calls from telemarketers. That drives me nuts. To stop it I now call (888) 382-1222, the registry’s toll-free number, and follow the prompts. That stops the calls. It’s my understanding that violators get fined. At least I hope they do. You can do it, too.

A Speak Out commenter said it’s a shame former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. didn’t learn anything from his father, the Rev. Jesse Jackson. I think Jackson Jr. did. Didn’t they both violate their marriage vows?
I heard that millions of American tax dollars are being used to train the Afghanistan police. Some of these Afghan troops killed our soldiers. Why not spend a few million and hire policemen to protect the poor taxpayers of Chicago?
The people of Tinley Park voted for term limitations. The village’s budget committee wants to appoint a commission to study mandatory term limits for all elected officials. What is there to study? Don’t they get the picture?
Ed from Tinley Park
Are people aware of our $16.5 trillion-and-climbing debt? We sure got change. This is serious. I still can’t get over the fact that Obamacare was passed without even being read by some people. What else is going to be rushed through and passed? Leave the Constitution alone.

I’m tired of those who denigrate state retirees about the amount of their pensions and tout their choice of working in the private sector. Those of us who chose to serve the public should not be denigrated. We faithfully paid into our pension system like I had for 25 years.

Regarding just because you have money does not mean you have class: To the person who commented back: I commend you. I could have not said that better. People are rude and ignorant. Money cannot buy class.
I think U.S. Sen. John McCain and U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham are two members of Congress who are running around opposing everything just to be seen and heard. If President Obama nominates a dogcatcher, then they will likely give you a reason why he wouldn’t be fit for the job.
