I think the economy must be worse than we thought if some thrift stores are closing as was reported in Jan. 28’s SouthtownStar.

To the Speak Out complainers: Sly and the Family Stone said it best in the 1968 song “Everyday People”: “There is a yellow one that won’t accept the black one that won’t accept the red one that won’t accept the white one.” “I am no better and neither are you. We’re all the same whatever we do.” Quit your complainin’.

I don’t under stand why the U.S. Postal Service raises the price of a stamp by a penny every couple years. They should make the stamp cost 50 cents and they should have done this a couple years ago.

BJ from Hazel Crest hit it on the nose. My daughter last year didn’t tell me until after a week that her school didn’t have toilet paper. Can you believe that? If I had known I would of sent some. There is something wrong with that picture.

In 2012 Illinois had 957 traffic deaths with about one-third linked to alcohol. Chicago had 500 murders. Now Chicago Ald. Ed Burke wants to ban energy drinks because they may be tied to five deaths since 2009. Thanks, Eddie. I feel safer already.

To those who don’t know or may be wondering: The delivery charge does not go to the drivers who go out in all kinds of weather and spend their gasoline money to deliver your food. What you give the driver or add on to gratuity from your credit card is what the driver keeps. The business keeps the delivery charge. So next time you order food, be kind. Even 50 cents would be nice because that’s how we make our living. If a person can spend $10 on food, they can spare something for at least the driver’s gas money.

Someone commented that President Obama is bad for small business. Why are businesses failing in Palos Heights? Wages are too low. From what I’ve seen middle-class wages have remained stagnant while corporation profits have soared. The greed in America is out of control. I think the Republicans have refused to work with Obama. They announced their goal to make him a one-term president when their goal should have been to help the middle class. Until the middle class has more money to spend, small businesses will continue to fail. Our policies need to favor the middle class not the wealthy.

Do people even know what the Second Amendment is? “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” What does this possibly have to do with hunters and recreational marksmen that compete in these states we live in? Watch the movie and pay close attention to the pictures at the end.

Kudos to state Rep. David Leitch for recognizing and speaking out on the real problem of mass shootings. These horrible crimes often are committed by someone who is on a mind-altering prescription drug. The Obama administration should concentrate their efforts on the real problem and get real help for the mentally ill instead of blaming the guns and trying to take away more of our constitutional rights. I want to see our leadership do something that will actually help stop these shootings. Talking about controlling guns is not the answer.

Regarding pension reform: The trick to pension reform is how the politicians can give everyone less while giving themselves more.

About high school sports coverage: Yes, there are other sports to cover other than the Chicago Bulls and the Chicago Blackhawks starting. There are the NFL playoffs and baseball spring training around the corner. I think the SouthtownStar never used this many pages on high school sports. And to say high school and college athletes play for the love of the game? I think a lot of times these kids are getting a pass on the grades just to let them play. Also, I don’t see too much college sports coverage anyway.

Let’s hold Gov. Pat Quinn accountable when these illegal immigrants getting driver’s licenses don’t buy vehicle insurance. They’ll lose their cars and licenses without it.

It was with great empathy that I read about Karen Gleason and her husband contending with the incredible financial morass that they and many others have been unwillingly thrust into because of the recession. Where are the pitchforks and torches at the steps of the White House, Wall Street, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, Congress and more? We’ve been duped by those who said, “Trust us; we know what’s best for you.” Well, we found out what’s best for them, but the thousands like the Gleasons were never in the picture from the start.

They can safely close the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay now. If they need information from prisoners there, all they have to do is sit them down in front of a television and let them watch all the commercials that are on now. They’ll start talking. By the way, I’m giving up television for Lent.

So what a child experiences in the home doesn’t matter? What? Violence begets violence. Open sex creates promiscuity. Drug use begets drug use. Wow! I think whoever made that comment is clueless.
