Where would you rank Chicago Ald. Ed Burke’s idea about banning energy drinks as far as importance in getting Illinois back to prosperity?
I’d like to thank Phil Kadner for the wonderful column “Vallas talks about his time in combat in Afghanistan” about the mental enemies and the wounds of war. I think it helps us all understand that we should never forget our veterans. We need to support and help our veterans in any way that we can. Thank you, Mr. Kadner, for always honoring our military.

I feel that the fire department needs to tighten their belt. They also need to perform other tasks. Sitting around in a firehouse just waiting for a fire to occur is ridiculous. I think nurses, Peoples Gas workers and ComEd workers are all available 24/7 with little or no perks like the fire department has. These other workers perform a variety of different tasks.
I wonder why women are so much better before marriage than after.
Illinois used to be known as the Land of Lincoln. Now Illinois is known as the Land of Link Cards.
Ray from Palos Heights
Welcome to Chicago, Mr. Marc Trestman. The Chicago Bears needed a great head coach like you. I hope the Chicago sports columnists give you a chance to shape the Bears into a great team. Chicago sports columnists are a savage bunch of Monday-morning quarterbacks. I just hope Trestman has a thin skin because he is going to need it with all of the critics and announcers who bum rap every move the Bears make.
What is the latest lame excuse for the gasoline prices going up so high again? It seems like every gas station is up about 25 cents again.
It seems like the Chicago Police Department is staffed by commanders who are yes-men and people who owe their jobs to the politics of the city and the police department. I’d bet that most promotions are politically motivated rather than earned by passing a test. Could this be the reason for the lack of discipline and lack of enforcement of laws?
A Speak Out commenter talked about his father coming from Europe through Ellis Island in the 1920s. My grandfather came from Italy and had to do the same thing. He was detained for three weeks while they checked out his background, his physical and mental condition and everything else. He learned to speak English on his own. Nobody taught him anything. He went through life as an immigrant but he was a hard worker. Nowadays people cut a hole in the fence and it’s welcome to America.

I read articles about putting armed guards in schools to protect our kids. These are the same schools where we cannot afford to have extracurricular activities or cannot afford to pay the teachers, but we are going to put a couple armed guards in the school. What are we going to cut? Will it be the math, science or history teacher? We will not need these things anymore because we are outsourcing all of our jobs. Let’s just let the kids walk the streets and have armed guards everywhere.
What a farce! The TV show “60 Minutes” is not a neutral media outlet. Outgoing U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was one of the worst and incompetent secretary of states. President Obama was prepping her for a 2016 presidential run.

How are they going to get the money for all of this pension debt that has been piling up for all of these years? I know without a doubt that we can indict about 80 percent of our politicians. They would lose their pensions. That would bring down Illinois’ pension debt from $96 billion to about $10 billion. How about that for a starter? They’ve spent it. They’ve misused it. They’ve stole it. Prosecute them and put them away.

Watching U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor on television I get the impression that he has finally realized that he cannot dazzle us with his footwork so he is going to baffle us with his balderdash. Nice try, Eric.
People who want to own assault weapons should have a mental health checkup. Who do they want to assault and why would they want to assault somebody?
Thank God for strong women in Congress who show these good-ol’-boys clubs how to get things done.
It would be nice if the public knew what our politicians are cutting back on.
Rich from Steger
Did we have so many shootings and so much crime when Jody Weis was Chicago police superintendent? Maybe somebody should ask him to come back and help straighten this current situation out. I give Weis some credit. When he was here we didn’t have what we have now. We didn’t have to take policemen from the desk. It’s telling the citizens of Chicago that we are not really going to put any more policemen on the streets. Somebody better step up to the plate and offer some good ideas.
A lot of people are freaking out about tax breaks such as the one for Golden Corral coming to Tinley Park. You need to understand how finance and business works. Why would any business go to a community that is gouging them in taxes? You might want to ask the residents of Wisconsin, Indiana or Texas where it seems that business is booming, unemployment is low and things are going well. Illinois is a horrible example of business. Maybe the local communities should have some seminars about how finances and businesses work.
