I’m an Oak Lawn parishioner who would like to thank the Rev. Lawrence Malcolm, of St. Gerald Parish, for sending a parishioner to return my purse, which I left in a pew about a month ago.

WGN-TV (Channel 9) weather “forecaster” Tom Skilling recently predicted 7 inches of snow, yet we only got 2 inches to 3 inches. I think he is way overrated and never admits when he was wrong, and he probably gets paid millions of dollars. Tom is a nice guy but he is a joke as a weather forecaster.

I am a reverend who thinks that Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart’s dress is disrespectful. After I saw the picture on the front page of Feb. 20’s SouthtownStar of Dart speaking at the Robbins Community Center, I was really disappointed in his personal appearance. The sheriff looked like he had slept in his clothes, and his hair looked as if it was a bird’s nest. Sheriff Dart’s appearance was disgraceful and disrespectful to the citizens of Robbins, and I believe that if he was speaking to citizens in the Homewood community he would be in business attire.

Instead of wasting money on the Taste of Chicago, why don’t you take that money and put more police officers on the street? We don’t need the Taste of Chicago. I think it ties up half our police officers now. That’s using your head. Maybe it will help with our crime rate.

Perhaps in a takeoff on the movie title “No Country for Old Men,” the Republican Party is called the party of “Old Angry White Men” by some. I guess I shouldn’t be offended if I’m Republican, white, old and angry about the state of affairs in America. I guess if they wait us out, old, white and angry will be a thing of the past. For some, the sooner the better. The question is: Based on the dire predictions for the country, how will it survive without us and our “old-fashioned” values when we are all gone?

With these sequestration cuts looming, apparently they will end up cutting government jobs. They act as if that is the worst thing to ever happen. I was in the trucking industry and we lost thousands of jobs. Thousands of tradesmen were out of work due to the housing downturn. Other industries have had layoffs. But heaven forbid any government workers should be laid off. That would be the end of the world; wouldn’t it?

The first step in recovery is admitting that you have a problem. In Illinois, our disastrous economy is because of the Democrats and their cronies in the public-sector unions alone. They have created a terrible system where people are being taxed out of their houses. The Democrats, with their super-high deficits and out-of-control spending, are responsible for our high unemployment and massive welfare state. It’s never going to get solved unless you quit blaming other people.

I must have the same newspaper deliveryperson as another Speak Out commenter. I’ve actually seen the driver just open up the passenger-side window and throw the newspaper out. One day I didn’t even get my newspaper until 10 a.m. Join the club. We also have bad deliverypeople.

I’m a dog lover. I believe you should leave dogs alone and let them live their lives. You should never abuse dogs. Some people believe that dogfights are cool. Dogs are abused and trained to win these fights. Dogs should be your friend and be part of the family forever. You shouldn’t beat, abuse or train dogs to fight.

I’m the commander of the Sons of the American Legion Detachment of Illinois and I would like to thank everyone who helped make the Sons of the American Legion commander’s benefit on Feb. 2 at 115 Bourbon Street in Merrionette Park a success. From everyone who worked to the entertainment and the participants, I give a heartfelt “thank you.” You will make life easier for our veterans and our children.

There was recently one of those mutual-admiration-society extravaganzas where Hollywood actors, actresses and directors receive awards for making mediocre movies. I couldn’t help but wonder how many of these people were the 1 percent who should be paying their fair share. President Obama missed a wonderful opportunity to start collecting from all of the evil rich people who owe more tax money to the government. I guess that was why first lady Michelle Obama was there, to collect the fair share.

I would enjoy reading articles in the sports section about students who excel both in their classes as well as on the field of play. Forget about the term “dumb jock.” Along with my son, many of the Andrew High School baseball players are Advanced Placement or honors students. These students are determined to achieve both in the classroom and on the field. They are terrific representatives of their school, their team, their family and their community. Their efforts and achievements need to be congratulated in the SouthtownStar.

A papal blessing probably makes people feel better, unlike atheists who have nothing to look forward to.

They are talking about all-day kindergarten at the same time that they want to close schools. Where are these kids going to go? Where are they going to get the money? They are always talking about tightening the belt. I think it’s time for the taxpayers to say we’ve had enough. These kids are going to dangerous schools. It’s out of hand.
