Long gone are the days when driving on the Illinois Tollway cost just a few coins. | File photo

The cost of gasoline and tolls keep going up. I think they want to gouge people who have no other way to get to work.
Many SouthtownStar readers have heard of Honor Flight Chicago. Others have been participants. World War II veterans have the opportunity, at no cost to themselves, to fly to Washington, D.C., for a day of honor and to see the memorial that honors WWII veterans. Now Korean War veterans may also apply to be added to an honor flight waiting list. Literature for Honor Flight Chicago and applications are available at the Tinley Park Public Library. The applications and literature supply necessary phone and fax numbers as well as the website and mailing address.

Regarding Sal Auditore suing the Will County Adult Detention Facility for violating his civil rights by serving him non-kosher meals: Dear Sal, your religion was not an issue when you were robbing elderly people, so why is it an issue now? If you were so religious you wouldn’t have ended up in prison in the first place. If this guy receives any monetary compensation as a result of his baloney lawsuit, I will completely lose all faith in the justice system.

About voting: This has been bothering me for a while. How do you vote someone out of office that is running unopposed? Speak Out readers, help! Thanks.
Why work to prosper when I can live off free money through entitlements from the government? You might want to check on how the American Indian has fared when it comes to entitlements.

What happened to the new rule regarding TV commercials not being louder than the programs? Who is monitoring this? There is a credit card commercial that will blast you out of your seat.
Seriously, why are our politicians traveling to Egypt and other foreign countries to help them out of their economic difficulties? What about staying home and helping the United States out of our economic difficulties?

In Speak Out we read about people talking on cellular phones and texting while driving, but I recently saw one of the most disgusting things a passenger could do. A woman was sitting in the passenger seat of a car smoking while holding a little dog in her lap.
Lou from Palos Hills
Why does the media report on anything relating to former Chicago Bull Dennis Rodman? There must be many other more interesting, newsworthy events happening in the world — like watching paint dry. While I am not losing any sleep over first lady Michelle Obama’s appearance on the Academy Awards, I think politely declining the offer would have been the proper move on her part. What a wonderful but increasingly weird world we live in.

To the newspaper delivery carriers who complain about their difficult job: I agree it’s not the best job in the world, but it’s not the customer’s fault. We pay for the subscription and that includes having the paper delivered. There have been times when my paper is practically out in the street. If I have to walk farther to retrieve my paper than you have to deliver it, there is something wrong with this picture. Do you really expect a tip after that?
It seems like the Chicago City Council’s Black Caucus is blaming Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy for all of the gun violence in Chicago. Why doesn’t the Black Caucus go into these neighborhoods and tell the people to start taking responsibility for their own actions instead of blaming everybody else for their actions?
What is a financial budget? It is a statement of revenues and expenditures. It’s money received and money spent on goods and services by governments, individuals and organizations. None of these concerns can spend more than they receive. The Obama administration seems to not understand this basic concept. They spend, spend, spend and don’t worry about the taxpayer. This sequester is the best budgeting guide for the governments of the United States. Don’t spend what you don’t have. It’s time to live within our means, not within our wants.
Edward from Frankfort
Someone commented about an unmarried 24-year-old woman with five children. Although I agree that she has made some bad decisions, I find your choice of words disgusting. To call human beings parasites is just not right. You do not know her circumstances, how she was raised or what she was around as a child. These innocent children should not be referred to as parasites. This type of ignorance or hatred does not help the situation. Don’t judge others until you are in their shoes. We need more empathy, compassion and respect for others regardless of our differences.
Let’s not be fooled. I think 2nd Congressional District Democratic primary winner Robin Kelly is one of former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.’s followers. She was backed by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg who has nothing to do with Illinois or the 2nd Congressional District. There are shenanigans going on. All of these people who dropped out of the race probably were offered jobs or some other benefit.

Is it about time? I saw the full-page ad saying, “It’s time for all Illinois couples to share in the freedom to marry.” What’s next — the freedom to adopt the child of their choice?
