On March 1, 2013, taxes on cigarettes sold in Cook County went up by $1 a pack. Antismoking activists say Chicago is now the second-most expensive place in the United States to buy cigarettes, behind New York City. (AP Photo/Charles Rex Arbogast, File)

In the past few weeks I have read of several drunk-driving accidents that have involved the deaths of young people. I have a solution. Let’s tax cigarettes some more.
Thank you to Bremen Animal Hospital in Tinley Park. From the kind woman who provided tissue after we received the news that Turbo was diagnosed with feline immunodeficiency virus and the supportive care that Dr. Aarthi Subram gave our momma cat to the kindness that Dr. Terry Becker and Katie showed when we had to let Turbo go, everyone was so comforting at such a difficult time. It was a great 10 years with a cat that lived up to her name by zooming around our home. We’ll miss her always welcoming everyone with a head rub and a lap-sit.
I think it’s not the teachers, police, the National Rifle Association or television’s fault for all this violence. It starts at home. There isn’t any structure. Most of the time, the fathers are not around or the mothers are bringing a new guy around every other day, or the mothers are not involved in their child’s life at all. Stop blaming everyone and everything else for the violence.
Thank you to John who delivers the newspaper in Burbank. It’s always right at the door.
It seems like in more south suburban towns the word “diversity” merely describes that relatively short period of time during which the first black family moves in and the last white family moves out.
With another fiscal cliff on the horizon, I only have one question: How did President Obama do when he went golfing with Tiger Woods?
Homer Glen’s elected officials are playing childish games with Meijer over parking spots. There are more than 100 parking spots that customers can use at Home Depot, Aldi, White Castle or Dunkin’ Donuts along with all of those parking spots along Bell Road in front of all those vacant strip-mall stores. Stop the stalling, Homer Glen officials. I believe Homer Glen needs a discount superstore. I think we are getting ripped off at Dominick’s and all the other stores around us including gasoline stations.
Seeing that I could not agree with my wife on a budget we, too, are in a sequester situation. I’m sorry to say this but we will have to begin cutting back on our taxes immediately.
I think there are so many abuses of our public aid system. All it takes to fix this is investigation. But the party in power will not investigate these people because these people are the party in power’s voting block.

To former Chicago Bull Dennis Rodman: Since you have now spoken to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and found him to be a wonderful person, why not come back here to the United States — where you were born, where you played basketball and where you made your money? Then talk to a few prisoners of war from the Korean War and get their perspective. If you still feel the same way about the North Koreans, then move there.

As long as I still have to go out to my street gutter to get my newspaper, my deliveryman will never get a Christmas tip.
Why are people so upset that illegal immigrants are getting driver’s licenses? I do not thin they will not be able to vote. You have to be a citizen and a registered voter to vote. Just because you have a driver’s license does not mean you can vote. Wake up and learn the rules.
So we can send Egypt $190 million but we can’t even fix our own budget. What is wrong with this America?
The Chicago City Council wants to put a ban on energy drinks. Who do they think they are to tell people how they can spend their money? This is completely ridiculous. They don’t realize that people will just go to the suburbs to buy it. Every time they do something they are just sending people to the suburbs or to Indiana to do these things. It must take a lot of brains to be a lawmaker.
When did every weather situation become a major crisis, no matter what the season? I have quit watching all of the so-called team coverage. I think it’s all way overdone. When did the schools start closing before the first snowflake has fallen? Snow happens. It’s the Midwest.
I volunteer at an animal shelter. It is rewarding yet sad to see pups and dogs leave here full of happiness and then be returned at a later date broken and needing to be fixed. When adopting, please sign up for at least a beginner’s obedience class. It will benefit you and your dog.
If you were a fan of President Obama then you wouldn’t care if first lady Michelle Obama presented an Oscar award or not. If you dislike President Obama then you would be against anything she or he does. Stop using Michelle Obama as a scapegoat.
Justice will be served in reference to former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife, former Chicago Ald. Sandi Jackson. The difference is that they pleaded guilty. Therefore, they saved that taxpayers a lot of time and money. Whether they go to jail or not is up to the judge. The children are innocent in all cases. Their best interests need to be considered.
What is up with apartment dwellers who have no consideration for others? Vacuuming late in the evening. Leaving clothes in the dryer long after your cycle is over. Have some common courtesy!
