Cardinals are in Rome to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI, who was the leader of the Catholic Church for eight years and is the first pope to retire since 1415. He cited ailing health as his reason for retirement. | Getty Images file photo

Regarding the new pope: I have it. The cardinals need to elect a woman as the new pope. I think this will straighten out the old boys’ club.
There are so many good people in the world. Since my husband has a heart condition, he cannot shovel snow. Our neighbors have been shoveling our snow every day, putting our SouthtownStar on the porch and taking our garbage cans to the garage door. We have such a fabulous group of people. There are so many nice people in the world.

I think for every $1 they add to the cigarette tax here in Illinois it sends another $5 to Indiana because people are going there for their cigarettes. I believe Cook County and Chicago are losing tax revenue big time every time they increase a sales tax.
It’s about time Tom Skilling, of WGN-TV (Channel 9)’s weather department, retired. I think he is nothing but a windbag. He goes on and on and on about garbage that nobody is even interested in. They have the nerve to give Skilling a 10-minute slot. He should get three minutes and get off the air.
I don’t know what is wrong with President Obama. All he has to do is exactly what U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor, U.S. House Speaker John Boehner and U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell say. Then they will all be happy. Of course, all of us middle-class people will pay through the nose.
Is anyone else hooked on the Investigation Discovery channel on cable? There are so many stories on different subjects that run 24/7 and they are all true. Once you start watching this channel, you are going to be hooked like I am. Sometimes I’m up until 3 a.m.
I get taxed for every little penny I make. I can even get taxed for the little bit of interest that I receive from the bank, which is nothing nowadays. Do politicians pay taxes on all of the campaign funds that they get? They get an awful lot of campaign funds. Isn’t it possible that they can pay taxes on that? Maybe they do but I don’t know.

Illinois is living up to its reputation of being the land of gangster Al Capone. Lawmakers keep trying to push a casino bill to Gov. Pat Quinn that they know he will not sign. Gov. Quinn wants the money to help schools and not to be used for campaign use. If you give him a clean bill then he will give you a casino. Stop trying to be slick.

Microengraving information on ammunition will not help solve crimes like the Lane Bryant murders from 2008. That ammunition could be stolen from stores. I have more than 30 years of law enforcement service. I wish this idea could help, but it will not.

The stock market in the United States closed at an all-time high on March 5. Our federal government is printing billions of $100 bills per month. Our debt is $16 trillion and rising. This reminds me of a children’s game: “ring-a-round a rosie, a pocket full of posies, ashes, ashes, we all fall down.” We have a bloated and wasteful government and no real leadership. It reminds me of 1929.
Regarding the negative Speak Out comment about Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart’s appearance, as in wrinkled clothing and unkempt hair: I have noticed his appearance has been like this for many years. He is a very handsome man, and I have often thought to myself how nice he would look in a suit with his hair neatly combed.

Thank you, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, for showing us how easy it is to buy an election in Illinois. It’s sad that we are going to have a person elected to represent people in the 2nd Congressional District that was all done with money.
Some individuals are challenging the need of unions. You should check with people who don’t have unions. What working conditions do they have? You may not belong to a union. That doesn’t make you bad. Do you honestly believe you would be receiving the salary and other benefits you may be fortunate to receive if someone in a union, doing work similar to your occupation, were being paid union scale and benefits? Like all organizations, individuals who started protecting members may have lost sight of the original obligation.
Matthew Herrmann, an Alsip man, and his friends got two years of probation for helping to put a noose around another child’s neck. This just lets them know that they can do anything they want and they’ll get a slap on the wrist. Maybe they would have received 2 1/2 years of probation if they would have killed him.

I am no basketball fan, but what is going on with Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose? He is being paid such big dollars to sit on his rear end and do nothing. And his coach, Tom Thibodeau, is backing him up and makes all kinds of excuses. Forget it! Get rid of both of them.

I think it is still a law in Illinois that pedestrians have the right of way. At 3 p.m. on a recent day I saw an elderly man almost get hit by two different vehicles at the intersection of 94th Avenue and 167th Street in Orland Hills. I was so busy making sure the man completed his walk across the street that I couldn’t get license plate numbers of the vehicles. They are lucky. Stop being rude people and learn the rules of the road.
