The new Mariano’s Fresh Market in Frankfort looks like a breath of fresh air with its coffees, smoothies, etc. I’m looking forward to checking out the upscale supermarket and all its amenities.
I would like to thank the three young men who showed up and cleared our driveway after the snowstorm here on Heron Lane. I offered them money and they said, “No ma’am. We don’t need the money. We are just glad that we could help out.” They have no idea what a wonderful and kind thing that was to do. My husband has bone cancer and I had already hurt my back shoveling half the yard and driveway. They were heroes.
I think 18-year-old high school students shouldn’t be allowed to vote. They have no life experience other than what they have been taught by their possibly biased teachers. Eighteen-year-olds were given the right to vote because of the Vietnam War and that they could be fighting for America but not able to vote. Those days are long gone. It’s a volunteer army. We need to get high school students out of deciding this country’s direction. They are too unexperienced and immature. Sorry, kids. That’s what it is. Now eat your dinner or go to your room and tweet to someone.
About the ramifications of gun control: Does anyone really believe that making new laws against law-abiding citizens is going to stop a criminal or a deranged person from committing crimes with guns? No one should fear a responsible gun owner. We do not condone criminal behavior, and laws that affect us do not prevent criminal activity. You cannot control the wolves by creating more sheep.
You can tell it’s tax refund time because there are a lot of cars with temporary plates. This is good news for the used car dealers and also for those who need transportation.
I think Social Security money was designed for just that, not to be tossed about into general funding. A simple answer to keeping Medicare and Social Security solvent is to keep jobs in America. It’s time for our government to step up on big companies’ wallets. Keep your jobs here or pay the price. Penalties should be put in place. For every job sent out of America, they should pay Social Security and Medicare for that worker to us. There are answers. If we lose workers then we lose payments into those funds. You know it and we know it.
A Speak Out commenter stated that first lady Michelle Obama went to the Academy Awards because she wanted to blend in with the normal people. Since when are there any normal people at the Academy Awards?
The home values in my area have dropped about $40,000 in the past few years. People who want to sell cannot. Their value is too low. So what are they doing? They are walking away. This makes a bad situation worse. We are in a Catch-22 situation.
Orland Park is seeking a grant to extend a bike path from the Stellwagen Farm to hook up with the other bike paths around town. Somebody should do a cost-benefit study on how many people would actually utilize the path. Is it worth it? If the money is coming from the state of Illinois and the state is broke, then where are they getting the money? This doesn’t seem to be a necessary item at this time. I think it’s ridiculous.
Teachers now fail to teach critical-thinking skills to their students. They just spoon-feed information to students and then expect them to regurgitate it back to them. Teachers don’t teach rational thinking. They only want to teach obedience and subservience. Students don’t actually learn about anything. They just learn to look up answers to questions on websites that are approved and type in the answers. I believe there is no thinking required. Is this any way to run an educational system?
Why in the world do we have to support Egypt at the cost of $190 million? We have people over here who don’t even have a loaf of bread to eat, have no jobs, can’t buy their children milk and can’t put gasoline in their cars. And we are going to give everything away to everybody? Why are we the supporters of the whole damn world? Support the United States of America!

The Legacy Girls who perform periodically at the White Fence Farm were ours to enjoy on a recent Sunday afternoon. A new routine and costumes from the 1950s put us all in a nostalgic mood. Our compliments to the Friends of the Library from the Tinley Park Public Library for this smooth and professionally run program. There are ladies checking our reservations, a ticket collector and women dispensing coffee and desserts. Attendance is always 100 or more. Mid-April will end the concert series until next fall. The force behind this well-run concert series is Bette Evans. Thanks again, Bette.

A lot of Speak Out comments are complaining and praising people who deliver the newspaper. Did you ever stop and think that everybody is different? Some people do better and some don’t on any job. Let’s just praise the people who do get the newspaper on your front porch. Let’s quit complaining.
What WGN-TV (Channel 9)’s Tom Skilling is trying to do is educate us. Many people actually enjoy being educated and learning something new every day. I guess other people enjoy living in their little world, not learning anything new. You can go to one of those news programs where they give you the weather in three seconds and continue on in your life. Leave Tom Skilling alone for those of us who like to be educated.
