Thanks to Donna Vickroy for sharing Tinley Park resident Vince Santolin’s story. It was fascinating to read about the retired pharmacist and World War II veteran who turns matchsticks into art.
I can’t believe the U.S. government cannot stop a coal-burning steamship from dumping coal ash into our precious Lake Michigan on every trip it makes across our lake. It dumps 4 tons of waste concentrated with arsenic, lead, mercury and toxic metals. The ship’s name is the SS Badger. The Great Lakes are a gift from God. We need to preserve them. Once these lakes are polluted we will all be desperate for freshwater. Do something now, not later.
Give a man welfare, a free cellular phone with free minutes, free Internet, cash for his children, food stamps, subsidized housing, free contraceptives, Medicaid, 99 weeks of unemployment and free medicine and he will vote Democrat for the rest of his life, and even after he is dead.
The government needs to arrest these street gang members, but call them street terrorists and send them to Guantanamo Bay because they are a threat to national security. That is the best way to break them up.

Where is the outrage and disgust that President Obama took time off to golf with a womanizing adulterer like Tiger Woods. Obama should be working on lowering the unemployment rate, stimulating the economy with new jobs, finding out why gasoline prices are more than $4 per gallon, and lowering our national debt. He should not be running down to Florida on taxpayer dollars to go play golf with Woods. What is next for this president? Will he go to the dog races with football player Michael Vick? If you lie down with dogs, you will end up with fleas.
The Illinois pension system is bankrupting the state. Somewhere we have lost our way. The pension system is not designed to make people rich. It’s just one leg of the chair. When you reach retirement age you should get a small pension if you have it coming and put it together with some savings to live a somewhat-comfortable retirement. But it’s obscene when you see people receiving $80,000 per year in pension payments or multiple pensions. A pension is supposed to be a supplement. Maybe there should be a limit to what you can receive per month.
Have people ever thought of why, in some cases, restrictive laws are passed, banning some of our freedoms? An example of such is cellular phone use when driving. The ban’s because of the lack of common sense, which is also called courtesy and safety for others. It always takes one or a few to ruin conveniences for everyone.
I agree that same-sex couples should be afforded the same rights as heterosexual couples by Illinois or any state. But I think it should be call a gay agreement or a lesbian agreement. It should not be called a marriage. It is not a marriage because these couples cannot come up on their own with a child.
For those who question why people need to carry a pocketknife: Pocketknives are more than just a knife. Some contain scissors, screwdrivers, can and bottle openers, tweezers, toothpicks, nail files and other implements. I needed the scissors recently to cut tags off a hat I bought and wanted wear out of the store.

For years the village sent out certain guidelines for residents to follow when burning yard waste, like notifying neighbors, only burning dry material, not burning grass clippings and not burning on holidays. These guidelines have been ignored. So now we have to do the right thing and ban leaf burning altogether. I live on a large wooded lot. With the help of our blue containers, some mulching and more effort, I can eliminate burning altogether. It’s time we’re more considerate of our immediate neighbors, our commuters traveling through our community and our neighboring towns, which don’t allow leaf burning.
Regarding obese children: There’s a simple solution to the childhood obesity problem. It’s called proper parenting. Cook healthy meals at home instead of getting them from a fast-food restaurant. You can even make this a family project (shopping, food preparation, etc.), ensuring more quality time with your kids, not to mention the money you’ll save.
Hang in there, folks, with these Chicago school closings. Remember that your mayor, Rahm Emanuel, loves you.
About bicycle traffic: Bicyclists use some good sense when peddling on medium- to high-traffic roadways without bike lanes or wide curbs. They should move on to sidewalks as they usually are a hazard, delaying motor vehicle traffic and causing drivers to swerve, potentially causing an accident trying to avoid hitting them. Skateboarding also shouldn’t be allowed on streets. One example of this is especially during rush hour on 52nd Street in Oak Lawn.
I agree about these big department stores and grocery stores. There is that saying that goes: “Too many chiefs and not enough Indians.”
If all the crooks in Crook County are in prison and re-elected into office, there may be a benefit. They can be let out on a work release program and have to attend meetings. To prove they attended the meeting. Their votes would have to be registered to prove they were actually working. Talk about productivity and accountability. This may be the answer.
