Congratulations to all involved in making the Southland’s ninth and final mural in the Lincoln Highway series a reality in Chicago Heights. It’s a fine way to honor history.

Mothers wanted their daughters to emulate actress Annette Funicello. She was always a young lady who was sweet, clean-cut and a Disney favorite. Rest in peace, Annette. There will never be another like you. They broke the mold.

Why does everyone in the United States from President Obama on down know who Trayvon Martin, the Florida shooting victim, is but not too many people know who Thomas Mastro, a recent Tinley Park shooting victim, is?

The Link card is not the same as a debit or credit card. I think the Link card is given to people who are not working for their money. I believe this is money from the taxpayers.

There are billions of galaxies each containing billions of stars. What is their purpose?

Here is an idea to save money in Illinois. Let’s have everybody in the General Assembly who is making less than $25,000 receive only a $750-per-year raise. If they make more than $25,000 then let’s not give them any raise. This seems sane to me. I think this is what they want to do to us retirees to punish the senior citizens of this state. This is ridiculous. Let them have these limitations.

They want to raise money to promote things for kids to do to stay out of trouble. You keep giving these people too many free things. Their parents are not looking after them. Their parents don’t even know where their kids are at. You can put all of the money that you want into these programs but if the parents don’t work or finish school, then you are wasting time. And I am tired of wasting my money.

Aren’t our politicians great? Now some of them are telling us that they are going to cut our Social Security. This is after I worked all my life and put money away. Isn’t it great to be an American? What great congressmen and aldermen we have!

You cannot change the definition of a man and a woman for the sake of having children into two men or two women for the sake of having children. It’s like trying to make a circle into a square or applying baseball rules into football rules. Both cannot be done and both will end up in destruction.

Oak Lawn

I think there is not enough respect, church and prayer nowadays. People were happier years ago when there was more of these.

Richton Park

I was really happy to read Irene Rosenfeld, chief executive officer of Mondelez International, made $22 million in 2012 due to the split with Kraft Foods. In the meantime there are people working around the clock down in Springfield trying to figure out how to deprive me of my 3 percent cost-of-living increase on my $35,000-per-year retirement pension. There is something very wrong here. Leave my cost-of-living adjustment alone. This is what I agreed to. It’s pitiful, but it’s all I got.

I don’t know if WBBM-TV (Channel 2) reporter Vince Gerasole is on too much coffee or he needs to go on decaf. Acting happy is fine, but acting stupid and silly is unreal. I don’t know why the head honchos don’t talk to him. I switch the channel when he is on. He is too bizarre for me.

It seems the U.S. government approved the trip to Cuba by rapper Jay-Z and his wife, singer Beyonce. The trip was based on “educational exchange.” Who are these people? They are from showbiz and Hollywood. What do they have to do with the education of Cuba? Come on!

Park Forest

I think a Daley or a Madigan as governor of Illinois will destroy Illinois for good. The Daley family has destroyed Chicago and Madigan has destroyed Springfield. I think both families are responsible for Chicago and Illinois being millions and billions of dollars in the red. If one of them is elected then we will surely end up like Detroit. This is one thing we do not want.

Why is it when I’m stopped at a traffic light the guy in front of me is always the last to realize when it turns green?

There was a time when you could tell your child that if they didn’t stay in school, then they would have to get a job or join the Army. There are no jobs for unskilled or uneducated people. This leaves you as a parent with aggravation, and leaves us with someone like a runaway train waiting for an accident to happen.

I voted. I’ve got to tell you that anger is a great motivator.

I agree with bringing back the death penalty. Why should we house, feed, provide medical care and clothe these prisoners? There should be no more appeals. Sentence them and bury them.

John from Bridgeport

Washington, D.C., is screwed up. It’s not just one party but both parties. Some Republicans would rather see people lose their jobs, people be turned away from cancer treatments and children being kicked out of Head Start programs than to give in from taking away anything from the rich. Meanwhile, some Democrats don’t want to budge on entitlement programs.

A lot of dog treats have been pulled off the shelves because they were made in China and contain contaminates. Why can’t these products be made in the United States and give jobs to people here who need it? Why are we sending jobs to China?
