Thank you to citizen journalist Julie Dekker for the informative article on coyotes in April 14’s SouthtownStar. More people need to be aware of what brings the animals to our yards. Well done!

People with good jobs think those who are on unemployment are deadbeats until those people lose their jobs. People with good health insurance resent providing health care for others until those people lose their health insurance. People who live in nice houses think welfare recipients are parasites until those people lose their jobs. “Conservative” has come to mean “I want to keep what I’ve got.” Life doesn’t always work out that way. Unlike animals, we help those who are weaker or have been struck by misfortune. I think as we grow wealthier we have become more greedy and less civilized.

Someone suggested a ban on knives after the rampage at Lone Star College in Texas. I assume that remark was made tongue in cheek, but don’t kid yourself. Someone will propose restrictions on the sale of knives.

Our vulnerable population is seniors who put their work time in. Meals on Wheels will come once a week. They get very little to eat.

Marriage equality would not only allow a complete freedom for Americans, but bring down the number of traumatic events caused by bullying because someone was, or assumed to be, homosexual.Someone can still look gay and feel worthless because of it, when they’re everything but worthless. Being as Christian as you are, would you really tell these kids, “Sorry you were bullied to death, but you shouldn’t have been acting that way?”

I’m a South Side Chicago Cubs fan, and I see owner Tom Ricketts and Mayor Rahm Emanuel got pretty much what they wanted for the Wrigley Field renovation.I did not see anything about renovating the Chicago Cubs.

I want to know if there is a more useless “sport” than water polo.

I believe there are people who truly need the Link card and free money, but I know of several who abuse the system. One girl really hates kids. She abuses whiskey and marijuana. She has twins who were not normal. She now gets so much help. She kept the kids for the benefits and is living free off the government. We have produced a new society living off of those that work.

Some quick Internet research confirmed that a court witness may be affirmed instead of sworn in. Different courts and countries have different rules. I was sworn in as a witness in a Joliet courtroom around 14 years ago using the old method. My original point in independent critical thinking was in response to some comments made earlier suggesting that believers don’t know how to think for themselves and, therefore, lack intelligence. My comment was meant mainly in defense of believers (God of choice) being able to use the brain that our God gave us.

It seems to me that there is a simple solution to ease the state of Illinois’ economic woes. Since aldermen, Cook County board commissioners and state representatives are part-time jobs, they should receive minimum wages and no benefits. You can include Congress and help solve the sequester.

I think speed cameras in school zones haven’t been the moneymaker politicos thought the cameras would be. They overlooked the limiting conditions of “on school days when children are present.” Now state Rep. Elaine Nekritz’s bill wants to increase the revenue flow.

Hey, ladies, many public rest rooms have toilet seat covers that are easy to use. You never have to touch the seat. How about using them?

How about that magic moment when you pay off the home mortgage? Wonderful, isn’t it? How about that horrifying moment when you realize that these good-for-nothing politicians have raised your property taxes to equal or exceed your mortgage payment? It’s an eye-opening experience, isn’t it?

My son Ryan is a senior at Andrew High School. I want to thank his teachers and coaches. They have positively encouraged, challenged, taught and coached my son in the classroom and on the baseball field. I have found my son being involved in high school sports has been a positive deterrent in his staying away from negative influences outside high school.

It’s too bad first lady Michelle Obama is not taking a 5 percent cut in her vacations and travels with her family and friends. I think we would have saved millions.

This is in response to the question of the purpose of stars and galaxies. God made them for multiple purposes: To be luminaries in the heavens, for signs and seasons (Genesis), to show his greatness and power (Isaiah), and to give him praise (Psalm 148).

Alsip Joe has been persistent in calling for Illinois to reinstate the death penalty. The death penalty was abolished because Illinois had an inordinately high number of innocent people being sent to death row. Gov. Pat Quinn wisely signed legislation to end capital punishment to make sure no innocent person was put to death.
