Have you heard about the new GOP? Instead of Grand Old Party, it stands for Guns and Oil (spill) Party.

Orland Park

I am so grateful to the South Suburban Humane Society for caring for and finding a home for my cat, Delilah. I was forced to give her up last August with the hopes of reclaiming her once I moved to a place that is pet-friendly. She was placed in a home about two weeks ago. I’m terribly sad that in two months I’ll be moving without my baby, but I can’t say, “Thank you,” enough for the care she received for so long.

Joe from Orland Park urged Catholics to “keep praying the rosary.” He advocated this because “God is listening and is answering their rosary prayers.” How would Joe know this? Is there any evidence to show that prayer has ever brought about a desired result? Catholics can pray the rosary, but they shouldn’t expect anything in return.

Jeff from Orland Hills

A Speak Out commenter stated that our public-sector employees are making very overinflated salaries. If the commenter went to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website and compared mean and median compensation statistics with Illinois human resources data, then I think the statistics would alter the opinion. I believe local free-market compensation sets what the public sector needs to pay qualified job applicants.

Here is how I believe large lottery winnings are distributed. The winner has a choice to receive the entire amount they won spread out over 20 to 25 years or a lump sum that is less than the amount received over an extended payout. A total prize of $338 million will probably mean the lottery needs to spend $200 million to purchase the annuity. Taxes are paid on the amount received yearly. If people take the lump sum, the amount they receive is usually the amount that would buy a long-term annuity, minus taxes on the lump sum.

Chicago

Seton Academy’s basketball coach Brandon Thomas’ disgraceful obscenity-laced tirade was a disgrace to basketball, the team and the families in attendance at the Class 2A state championship boys basketball game. His actions were a terrible display of sportsmanship. He should be terminated immediately for this disgusting behavior.

Alsip Joe

The two things that will dominate Chicago baseball: One, the battle between the Chicago Cubs, the rooftop business owners and the city of Chicago. Two, Chicago White Sox TV broadcaster Ken “Hawk” Harrelson complaining about the lack of attendance at U.S. Cellular Field compared to the Cubs’ attendance at Wrigley Field.

Two bombs at the Boston marathon. People are dead and maimed for life. No guns were involved, only one or more crazies who don’t value human life. Yep, banning guns instead of locking up the nuts will really make a difference.

Look at the scam going on in Washington, D.C. Politicians play the game. I think most Congress members move on to become lobbyists and make millions. Laws are written by lobbyists for special interest groups. I think our government is no longer for the people; it is for the wealthy few who pay to manipulate our system. And you continue to complain about the Link card!

To the neighbor concerned about the 8-year-old: First, make sure your facts are right. You don’t want to have a confrontation with the parents. Call your local law enforcement and they will call the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. They will look into your complaint.

Willie from Oak Forest

Here’s information for the commenter who asked about donating unused medical supplies: Physicians for Peace (physiciansforpeace.org), MediSend International (medisend.org) or some Salvation Army locations accept unused medical supplies. Also check Doc to Dock in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Doctors Without Borders.

My grandmother used to say that Satan has power also. Every day you pick up a newspaper or watch television it’s one killing after another. My question is: “Has Satan taken over?”

BJ from Hazel Crest

What about Texas, the fertilizer plant explosion and all the people who were killed and hurt? The media is giving those two terrorists involved in the Boston Marathon the fame and glory they hoped for. I’m sending out prayers for the people in Texas, too.

Bunny from Frankfort

I’m a 55-year-old Oak Lawn resident. I have had the pleasure of working in the public and private sectors for union and nonunion employers. I’ve learned that nothing ever changes unless you, as an individual, get involved. It seems that the people who complain the most seem to do the least. When I read Speak Out, I sometimes get the impression the majority who complain don’t get involved.

The high school I know charges an entry fee for its sporting and other events. Concessions are extra.

Our Constitution is being used as a “club” against us all in defending interlopers who enter the United States with ill will toward our people. They lay in the shadows and, if identified, use our laws to force us to allow them to receive our form of justice. The Constitution was intended for people desiring freedom from oppression. It was not intended as a tool to tear down freedom and cultivate their form of subversive oppression.
