Irish Fest at Chicago Gaelic Park in Oak Forest looked like the perfect way to kick off summer. What’s your favorite Southland festival?
We would like to give a shout-out to our 7-year-old neighbor Elizabeth. She puts our newspaper on our porch bench every morning. It’s so nice not to have to go down the driveway every morning in the cold, snow or rain. Thank you from two senior citizens.
Illinois has the worst credit rating in America and was recently dropped from an “A” grade to an “A-” by Fitch Ratings. What a joke! When I was a kid, that grade went up on the refrigerator. Call it what it really is: “F.”

I would like to investigate the number of entities that have tax-exempt status and why they are entitled to tax-exempt status.
OK, Jeff from Orland Hills, you’ve proven my point. However, I’m not trying to convince you to believe anything, just as you try to convince people there is no higher power by simply playing devil’s advocate. Your burden of proof against a higher power existing has yet to be realized. As intelligent as you seem, you must know that math and science textbook regurgitations are not going to convince people to terminate their faith. You also must realize that your thorny, antireligious philosophies only strengthen the resolve of Christians. Maybe try Judaism or Islam, but I won’t hold my breath.
Regarding the comment about enforcing laws for peace and safety: Since when do the Burbank police have more important things to do other than write tickets for goofs that disturb residents with their loud mufflers on cars and motorcycles? It’s the police’s job. On another issue, in all towns police should ticket drivers who don’t use their turn signals even when changing lanes. This can cause rear-end and front-end collisions.
A Speak Out commenter recently said he didn’t like seeing two men kiss on television. I used to watch “One Life to Live” on WLS-TV (Channel 7). The soap opera featured, as subplots, characters involved in rape, teen pregnancy, incest, rampant adultery, murder, kidnapping, blackmail and deceit. I guess it was OK to watch all that because the characters were heterosexual. I’m assuming that nobody finds topics like rape and incest offensive and indecent.
I think another system that is being abused is the Women, Infants, and Children food assistance program. They should take a look at this.
Lies, falsehoods and disregard for the truth aren’t grounds for impeachment. If you want to impeach President Obama, you’re going to have to have the truth plus facts to back you up. The public knows what Republicans are trying to do. Come midterm elections, they’re going to get trounced. U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann decided not to run for re-election. She likely knows what’s coming. Also, the media can keep thinking Democrats aren’t going to show up at the polls, but you better believe that light at the end of the tunnel is a Democratic freight train barreling down on Republicans.
Many readers may not be aware that your local libraries have summer adult and youth reading programs. Visit your local library and sign up for a library card or renew an expired card. There are weekly raffle prizes donated through the generosity of your local businesses. There are reading goals, which will gain you chances for raffles and other prizes. Don’t wait for next week. Sign up now. Different suburban libraries have their own unique programs for the summer. You are only a phone call away from an adventurous summer through reading.

Aren’t there any other issues going on in Illinois that are more important than the gay marriage proposal? I think we have other issues that are a little more serious than this. Give me a break!
To GWC: You are right about one thing. U.S. citizens deserve answers to why the Internal Revenue Service was investigating private conservative groups. A few years ago, no one cared when the IRS targeted liberal groups. Also, just because Lois Lerner, director of the tax-exempt organizations division at the IRS, is a public servant doesn’t mean she loses her civil rights protections under our Constitution. Conservatives should try reading the Constitution. It’s a great document. Sometimes the squeaky gear doesn’t get all the grease; they just get replaced. I know this for a fact because I’m a mechanic by trade.

The Jewel-Osco on 183rd Street and Kedzie Avenue in Homewood has turned over a new leaf. The people they have hired are polite and show a lot of people skills. They make you feel welcome. They go the extra mile to assist you. It’s good to see young people working again.

Brenda Heist, a Pennsylvania mother who went missing 11 years ago, has turned up in Florida. She said she didn’t know how she would survive after her divorce and left her two kids with her ex-husband. She turned herself in. Her family said they didn’t want any relationship with her. Isn’t this what some men have been doing to their families for years?
Taxpayers who fear that the third airport is going to crash into financial reality shortly after takeoff and explode can stop worrying. I think the politicians have a backup plan to turn the site into a tourist attraction advertised as the world’s biggest white elephant or Starved Rock East.
