Bravo to all the people participating in Relay for Life events throughout the Southland. Together, we can find a cure for cancer.

My wife and I decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary by going out for lunch. We went to Applebee’s in Tinley Park and had a great meal along with fantastic service. Many thanks to Gina and the staff for turning our special day into a “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” day.

Let’s see if I have this right. Let’s take underperforming students out of an underperforming school and put them in a more advanced school so they will do better. If that works then take the Chicago Cubs out of Wrigley Field and build a new stadium at the taxpayers’ expense and maybe the Cubs will win a World Series. Thanks, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. This is great logic.

Why did hardly anyone say anything about U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush’s “elitist white boy” comment in reference to U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk? If this was said in reverse it would have been considered a racist remark. Why isn’t this considered a racist remark toward white people that was made by a black man? I think this is completely unfair. And what more does Rush want? I’m certain that people who have lost their children due to gang violence are not too happy about it. It seems like any solution is better than what they are trying to live with now.

I think Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan is trying to make Gov. Pat Quinn look bad just to give his daughter Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan a better chance to become governor. A lot of people don’t care what the people want or what is good for the state. All they want to do is make one person look good or another person look bad.

It’s time for the Internal Revenue Service to be completely dissolved. There is no need for it if we have a flat tax. Get rid of the IRS. The people will enjoy more of their money and the government will still have plenty of money to spend and waste as usual.

Why is it that professional sports seemingly don’t have to abide by the same rules as companies? Why is it that there is age discrimination in sports? Why is there height discrimination in the NBA? Why isn’t there any sort of affirmative action for sports? Do you see how ridiculous affirmative action is?

Homophobia should be a mental illness. I’ve been reading articles from neuroscientists and psychologists that say it should be, and I agree. When you feel so strongly that someone else’s private life is going to infringe on your life, your children, your beliefs or your education — despite the fact that homosexuality existed since the beginning of time — and you use the Bible as “proof” of humanity’s downfall because of homosexuality, you’re probably mentally crippled.

It is long past the time that we pensioners acknowledge that we pensioners, whose benefits are in jeopardy, have paid our fair share into the system and pension fund. Our pension fund has been looted numerous times by Illinois’ crooked politicians. We are entitled to benefits that we paid for over many years of hard work. The people who raided our funds should be put in jail with former Gov. Rod Blagojevich and former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. They are a disgrace.

The National Security Agency is collecting the telephone records of millions of U.S.-based Verizon customers due to a secret court order obtained under a George Bush administration policy. I keep hearing complaints about this. We do not want terrorists attacking America and we want our government to protect us, yet we complain when we find out some of the ways they are trying to protect us. You can’t have it both ways. Do you want our government monitoring for terrorist activity or not? I do.

Someone commented in Speak Out about Barbara Walters and David Letterman being too old and the most irritating people on television. I totally disagree as I find political commentator Bill O’Reilly to be the most irritating of them all as he seems to chew people up and spit them out, and he does not show respect to men and women alike if he disagrees with them.

I’m the last one to stand up for a big business, but kudos to General Mills for its commercial for Cheerios featuring a biracial family. Shame on those who find this offensive! What is really offensive to educated people and people of goodwill is your bigotry. Two human beings of different races should not be able to fall in love and have a family, according to you. That is ignorance and bigotry at its highest.

About the May 19 Forum letter to the editor by Patricia Kachold, of Burbank: I agree with her in commending St. Xavier University professor Reza Varjavand for his comments on the customs of Muslim women. They, as all immigrants that come here, should embrace our laws and customs. Previous generations that came here did so, learned English and accepted our way of life. If you can’t do so, return to your native country. No person going to live in your country could force their agendas for they might be tortured and/or killed. This is America. Love it or leave it.

Regarding if we want security or freedom: Columnist Phil Kadner hit the nail right on the head in June 7’s column. We had better attend to our freedoms.
