Thank you to all the volunteers who work at and with animals shelters in the Southland. It’s because of you that so many animals find forever homes.

The next time you go to the cemetery to visit a loved one you miss, take a look around to see if there are any headstones of military personnel. See if the headstone needs to be tidied up. Take a moment and just do it. This is one way I thank them for their service.

John from Oak Lawn

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin will have a tough time come 2014 because he is for government and not his constituents. We do not need the government to run our lives. Wake up, America! Vote him out.

MaryAnn from Palos Heights

Politicians who stole from us should not get special privileges. They say former Chicago Ald. Sandi Jackson will get 18 months and her husband, former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., will get four years. But they say since the Jacksons have two children, Sandi should serve one year and then Jesse will start his sentence while Sandi serves the rest of hers at home, so someone will be at home with the children. They surely stole our money at the same time. They should serve their sentences at the same time. I think this is nothing but political-privilege garbage.

Regarding Link cards: Here’s a new one for the Link card police. I saw someone use the card to buy four dozen cupcakes all nicely decorated for a baby shower.

What is the deal with Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan not returning Gov. Pat Quinn’s phone calls? Talk about the height of arrogance. It sounds like he is trying to get Quinn embarrassed enough so that Madigan’s daughter Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan can take over his job. The man is a menace. Madigan’s pension plan is ridiculous and his arrogance is beyond belief.

JK from Tinley Park

Don’t blame the drug lords, the pushers or the gangbangers. Blame the user. The users create a market for these drugs and turn it into one of the largest businesses in the world. Stop the using and the rest of the business will dry up. Just remember that the next time you shoot up or snort that you have contributed to the killing of an innocent child. Nice thought, huh? Sleep well.

Chicago

The American people are being led down the primrose path by President Obama and his merry band of coconspirators. The emperor’s old scandals like Benghazi and Operation Fast and Furious are being buried because of all the new scandals like the abuses by the Internal Revenue Service. Inside the Beltway, there are no secrets. People in Washington, D.C., know many things the citizens don’t know. Don’t let these things get buried. All these things need to remain on the surface and be completely investigated. They will throw different agencies under the bus just to keep the American public distracted.

Eagle Ridge 3

To the commenter who asked, “Who created Satan?”: The answer is man.

Mel from Orland Park

I would like to give a huge “thank you” to Jerry at the Great Escape in Bridgeview. He is so knowledgeable and helpful and is always willing and able to help with pool problems. Happy swimmers in Burbank!

It’s amazing. Watching NHL games, you see many interviews with foreign-born players. It’s interesting that they speak almost perfect English with an accent yet we have many born here and raised here speaking a foreign tongue. They can barely speak English yet are Americans. I think something is wrong with this picture. If you don’t want your kids to speak English, then stay in your homeland. I’ve heard that kids immersed in English speak it better than those who are taught English in bilingual classes.

Once upon a time labor unions might have served some purpose. If you visit nonunion areas, you realize the cost of living is much lower. I think that like government, unions have become a means of relieving workers of their money.

Why do people think it is acceptable to come to the dentist’s office for services and not have your checkbook or credit card? Are you able to go to the grocery store and pick up a few things and just walk out? If you have dental insurance, you need to pay your expected portion. If you don’t have insurance and you leave without paying, that is called stealing.

Anyone who has missed the journey to walk through the Shrine of Christ’s Passion in St. John, Ind., has missed a wonderful experience. Maybe some of the nonbelievers in the Lord should take this journey. The awakening of what Jesus did for all of mankind and our mistakes in life makes one wonder why he did this suffering for those who disbelieve. Jesus had no preferences. He suffered for everyone — all faiths, all of mankind — unconditionally. Take this journey if you can and experience a wonderful awakening.

Patti from Blue Island

I think the Chicago Blackhawks were robbed of a win in game two of the Stanley Cup finals. Because of a blind referee, Jonathan Toews’ goal wasn’t counted, costing them the game. It’s time for hockey to change the rules. If playback shows a goal, it should count. A game shouldn’t be lost because of blindness or favoritism. Anytime a call costs a game, the referee, relatives and friends should be investigated. A lot of money is won or lost on these games. What a joke!

I, for one, am tired of hearing about immigration reform. Let’s reform America first.
