Instead of going through with a proposed Chicago casino, why doesn’t the city council propose a bill so you can just mail them your money?
As someone who has been a cashier for years at a major grocery store and has seen the Link card abuses, I would say that maybe 50 percent of the people who have a Link card deserve it. Women who are constantly pregnant, someone who is driving a $40,000 brand-new car and somebody who is wearing designer clothes and handbags do not deserve my money out of my pocket. I’m tired of the Link card abuse.
Some of the local media seem to infer that convicted felons former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife, former Chicago Ald. Sandi Jackson, should be given light criminal sentences because of past good deeds. Both are criminals. Reducing sentences should not be considered by our court system. Evil people who produce evil deeds must be punished. If Cicero’s former town president Betty Loren-Maltese can have her daughter taken care of for seven years while she was in prison, the Jacksons should not be given leniency. They didn’t care about their children when committing fraud.

It sure is a three-ring circus in Springfield. I don’t think the Republicans or any other group that gets into Springfield would do any worse. What fools are we? We keep electing the same Democrats every time an election comes up.
Chicago schools are in a crisis. Mayor Rahm Emanuel is getting $99 million to beautify the Chicago riverfront and another $292 million for O’Hare International Airport. For goodness’ sake, will someone please tell me what Chicago’s mayor is thinking?
Does this sound fair? 1. If you buy a home, would you expect your neighbors to pay your mortgage? 2. If you buy a vehicle, would you expect your neighbors to make the payments? In other words, you take responsibility for your own expenses. Don’t you? Your neighbors who have no children are paying for your children’s education via property taxes. Why should they have to do that? They didn’t bring children into the world. It should be your responsibility to pay for your children’s education. If you can’t afford having a child, don’t have one.
Four-year-old Annabella Loerop is killed by a drunken Deandre Wolfe, then 16, who gets “punished” with probation, a fine and community service. How can this be? What a slap in the face to that child’s family and a shameful demonstration of our justice system!
I left Frankfort for a driving vacation out West. I filled up here for $4.37.9 a gallon for regular gasoline. Throughout my Colorado drive I never paid more than $3.69.9 a gallon. On the way home, my first fill-up in Colorado was $3.57.9 a gallon, my next in Nebraska was $3.49.99 a gallon. The next morning in Omaha I paid $3.25.9 a gallon, and my last fill-up before Illinois in Davenport, Iowa, was $3.41.9 a gallon. In Ottawa I saw gas for $3.69.9 a gallon. Back in Frankfort, it was $4.37.9 a gallon. Man are we saps! That includes me.
While the Chicago Blackhawks certainly blew game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals against the Boston Bruins, it was a terrible call in game 2 that cost the Hawks that game. I wonder how legit the referees really are.
I’d like an economist to put a cost on all of these shootings and murders in Chicago. They have to go to trauma centers. You have to provide doctors and nurses. You have to provide investigators and police. Once the court system is involved, you have prosecutors and public defenders. The cost has to be astronomical. This is such an unnecessary drain on the taxpayers. Can’t people live in a civilized manner?
I would like to respond to what I think is an absurd comment that pictures should be put on Link cards. My mother was in the unfortunate position of needing a Link card because her income was below the standard. When she was ill and unable to shop for herself I used her card to go and buy her groceries. If her picture had been on it and I couldn’t have used it for her, what would have happened. Would she just have starved because she couldn’t get groceries?
Regarding GWC’s comment on the Stanley Cup playoffs: I agree completely that it is wonderful to hear the players being so complimentary of their opponents’ skills, teamwork and effort. But of course, this only makes sense after the constant bar-type brawls, which seem to occur in almost every hockey game. When they have each other in simultaneous headlocks, I can only imagine that with each fist blow to the face, they are quietly whispering to each other, “Hey, man, your teamwork is awesome.”

To the Burbank commenter who didn’t understand why people spent so much money to see the Rolling Stones in concert: If you had gone to any of the Rolling Stones concerts you’d have seen that guitarist Mick Taylor is back touring with them this go-around and playing a few songs as a special guest. By the way, if you’ve never been to a Rolling Stones concert, you don’t know what you’re missing.

Here’s another way that people have abused a system. How many people out there have cheated and lied and taken a chance when they do their income tax returns to get extra money back? And you know, of course, that not everyone gets caught.
