Let’s give a shout-out to the Chicago Blackhawks. What a team! What a finish! What a season! They are the Stanley Cup champions for 2013. Way to go, Hawks!
With all the news lately regarding plastic grocery bags, I guess the good old days weren’t so bad. There were paper bags that were reused and pop and milk bottles that were brought back to the store and reused. It sure would save on recycling that I don’t think many of us do properly. It sure would save our planet.

I’m a dog owner who wanted to comment on kids who break bottles on the Butterfield Park walking trail or shoot bottles with BB guns. These kids are endangering dogs and barefoot children and destroying tires of bike riders. Pieces and shards of glass cause serious and excruciatingly painful injury to bottoms of dogs’ feet that are slow to heal and expensive to treat. There are no trash cans anymore, and I think the trail is poorly patrolled.
I don’t like singer Miley Cyrus’ short haircut. It’s too boyish-looking.

To Steve from Tinley Park, I totally agree with you. You shouldn’t have to look at your neighbors’ junk. In Burbank we have a blight committee we can call that will look into complaints. Call your village hall.
Chicago politics are out of control. They have excuses for everything. They voted to sell the parking meters and later said it’s killing business. Now they want to build a third airport near Peotone. State Sen. Toi Hutchinson is pushing for the airport and wants to get along with peers who helped her get elected. It sounds like we’ll run you over if you’re in the way. How many Democrats thought the same thing about the parking meters? Give them a 75-year lease; it will be a big moneymaker. This third airport is a great deal. Hurry, get it passed.

A commenter congratulated the Democratic Party in Illinois for all the problems. Let’s be fair. Both the Democrats and Republicans are to blame for Illinois’ problems. The financial issues have been created over the years by both parties. And did you forget that former Gov. George Ryan is a Republican? I think the free market is to blame for our high gasoline prices. Wall Street speculation plays a role in what we pay for gas.
To the commenter who said putting a picture of a Link card recipient on the card would have prevented using it to shop for a sick mother: What an excuse! Think of all the times your mother sacrificed for you. Couldn’t you front her the money until she’s able to shop, or were there things you might have needed too? This is what’s wrong with kids these days. I took care of my wife’s grandmother and mother until they died. I feel sorry for parents whose kids think only of themselves. It’s all in the way you were brought up.
Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife, former Chicago Ald. Sandi Jackson, have a lot of nerve asking for leniency for their crimes. They spent up to $750,000 on themselves. That’s a big crime. Who has been taking care of the children in Washington, D.C.? Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich received 14 years for political corruption, but he didn’t take any money. This sounds like a double standard to me. If you do the crime then you must do the time.
Change is the only constant in life, so try to roll with the punches.
I strongly urge that we rethink allowing presidents two consecutive four-year terms. I believe one five-year term is sufficient. This may prevent presidents like Barack Obama from seizing unconstitutional powers. The fact that Obama may have used the Internal Revenue Service to harass his enemies is proof enough for me. Let’s impeach Obama and go from there. We deserve better.
Here come the lies again about minimum wage. From what I’ve heard, most minimum wage earners are not young people. There are many adults who work at these low-wage jobs. Most are not full-time employees as the “job creators” find it convenient to hire people for less than 32 hours a week so they don’t have to provide benefits. Another thing “job creators” never explain to my satisfaction is: Why should young people have to work for really low wages just because they’re young?
Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan and Illinois Senate President John Cullerton financially ruined the state. With the help of their lemmings, Mikey and Johnny elect Gov. Pat “I have no clue” Quinn. Mikey plays the bad cop and Johnny is the good cop to save us as far as pension reform. Here’s a look at the future. Mikey retires and we forget about his screwup. Mikey’s daughter Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan gets elected governor. Now Mikey is more powerful than ever. He is really the governor because Lisa also has no clue.

On the hiking trails near 151st Street and Oak Park Avenue in Oak Forest, my teenager broke her arm while rollerblading on a Sunday. She contacted my friend who found her in shock and bleeding. I rushed home from work to bring her to the emergency room. She said the only person who offered help as she lay on the side of the path was the homeless veteran who is often on 143rd Street and Harlem Avenue holding a sign. If you pass him I hope you’ll give him something for helping my daughter and thank him for his service.
