Now is a great time to explore the Southland via bicycle. Take a break from your hectic schedule and spend some quiet time along the beautiful trails in the forest preserves. Your soul will thank you for it.
Congrats to the Chicago Blackhawks on their big win. I’m in my 30s. Kids, enjoy this. When I was young we didn’t have cable. I listened to every game on the radio. I lived and breathed Blackhawks hockey. This is for Chicago. However, it is especially for the true fans who were there when we didn’t know the meaning of “best of seven.” I saw the Blackhawks in one Stanley Cup final up until recently. For fans, players and coaches alike, enjoy it. Oh and, coach Joel Quenneville, you can smile now. You, too, Jonathan Toews aka Captain Serious.
Education is expensive; ignorance is more expensive, or so the saying goes. Why should people without children pay taxes to schools? I have a suggestion. How about if we put the people who don’t have children in a special town where all the adults are illiterate and then see how well their society functions? Surely childless people paid education taxes when you were in school. All people without children benefit from the schools in many ways, too many to list in less than 100 words.
A Speak Out commenter called me ridiculous for my comment about the TV show “Chicago Fire.” The only way a person would know if the show actually depicts what a firefighter goes through on a daily basis is if he is one. I am not. I am glad my favorite show was renewed for another season. I hope I was not being called ridiculous for how much I appreciate all fire and police personnel for their life-risking job they do 24/7.

To the commenter who said marriage is an institution that was created by man: Only a marriage license, which means permission, was a creation of man. Marriage was first created by God as between a man and a woman. Others have civil unions, not marriage. A license is permission from a competent authority to do that. Without such permission, it would otherwise be unlawful. Law always pertains to natural law, not man’s statutes. I think it is unlawful to perform a marriage without God’s involvement unless there is permission, i.e., a license with a competent authority by man.
I feel sorry for these teachers who are losing their jobs due to the school closings. The way unemployment is up nowadays, what are these poor people going to do for their families? I sure hope they can survive, but it goes to show you that Mr. Bully doesn’t care as long as he has money in his pocket. It’s a shame how all of these teachers are going to lose their jobs after all these years.
I think hockey players are much better role models for children than a lot of the other sports players. They always show class. The game is rough, but after the series they always show class by shaking hands and congratulating each other for a good game. You don’t hear about these guys getting arrested for drugs or murders. For as rough and tough as they are, the National Hockey League players certainly have much more class than football, basketball or baseball players.
I don’t care what the Illinois Legislature passes on concealed carry. It will be another democratic symbolism-over-substance-type bill. I’m sure anything they pass will make it too difficult and/or costly for the average law-abiding person to obtain a permit. The shootings in Chicago probably will continue. This will only strengthen the concealed-carry opponents’ position that it has no effect on crime. Those that do concealed carry, regardless of the law, will continue to. I suggest the Legislature not vote on it. Let’s try concealed carry with no restrictions. We should enforce the laws we have rather than Band-Aid the situation.
I wish the media would please leave celebrity chef Paula Deen alone already. Who among us can say that they have never said the N word? I am not proud of it but I have said it. But as Paula Deen has stated it’s what is in your heart that counts. Saying a word does not define a person’s life. Let’s move on and leave this woman alone.

Many in our family, male and female, have gone into the military. How is it that most presidents’ children including President Obama’s have not gone into the military to set an example?

I think Metra paid outgoing chief executive officer Alex Clifford more than necessary. They know how to look out for each other. The reason stated for the huge severance was he had to uproot his family to come here. Give me a break! Many people have left one state and moved to another for employment. If things didn’t work out, then they are out of luck.
Congress can’t even agree to disagree.
Many graduations for 2013 have taken place. Congratulations to all the Southland achievers from grade school, high school and college. What a wonderful achievement! Moms, dads, grandparents and all involved family members should be commended for doing your part in assisting these young men and women to achieve their goals. Graduates are our future. Make it bright and worthy of all your hard work. Good luck.

I think the United States is the stupidest nation in the world. We fall for everybody’s line of baloney about how poor and needy they are. This country is going down the tubes. It’s a shame to see it. Our ancestors’ and current people’s sacrifices are in vain. America is not the country it once was. It will never be the country it once was.
