Boston Red Sox player David Ortiz should be ashamed. Anyone who saw July 27’s game against the Baltimore Orioles knows why. Grow up, Dave! Control your temper. Kids are watching you.
I noticed the Chicago Bears have the second-highest average overall ticket price this year for a football game at an average price of $416 a ticket. Wow! But these owners keep on paying more and more to these players. The fans should stay away for a year at these prices. It’s a game.
Why are some people referring to the stand-your-ground laws as racist? It is my understanding that the law simply states a person who feels threatened that their life is in danger has the right to defend themselves and is not obligated to run away. The law doesn’t mention color, race, creed, gender or any other limiting factor. For them to say it’s racist, they are making the racist presumption that the aggressor is always black and the victim is not. I wonder if they realize this when they say that.
I trust National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden more than the U.S. government. It’s nice to see an ordinary citizen pull the pants down on our lying and spying government.
In 2008, I had the privilege, honor and responsibility of being selected jury foreman on a murder trial in Cook County. Part of the judge’s instructions included to use your life experience and logic to help in rendering a verdict. Ignoring George Zimmerman’s profiling and following of Trayon Martin despite the instructions from the 911 operator shows absolutely no common sense whatsoever. If we only used evidence to incarcerate defendants, then half the criminals in prison would have to be released. Our accused killer was found guilty.

Everything Phil Kadner stated in his July 4 column was correct including the emails he noted receiving about a communist/fascist/Muslim being in the White House, Republicans in Congress trying to destroy the United States by bringing the legislative process to a standstill, and the U.S. Supreme Court undermining the institution of marriage. Everything stated in his column is right on.

It’s time to build the third airport. People need the jobs. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a lot of jobs in the Southland as there is around O’Hare International Airport?
Regarding the 57-year-old woman who says she had to risk her life driving around the courthouse on 26th Street and California Avenue, and looked for a parking space for an hour and used up $16 worth of gasoline: How about parking in the parking garage next time you’re called to perform your civic duty? Also, you may want to trade your vehicle in for one that gives you better gas mileage.
Trucks are supposed to be in the right two lanes. Unfortunately, this is not adhered to from what I’ve seen. I have given up calling *999 and the Illinois State Police to complain about the trucks running three or four lanes wide because nothing ever seems to be done about it.
Where are all the demonstrators for this 6-year-old shooting victim Quianna Tompkins? You don’t see anybody coming forward and holding a rally for her shooting. Why isn’t anybody speaking up for this little girl?
Grow up! Why do supposedly grown men and women wear baseball (or any other style) caps backwards? High school is behind you now. Start acting like it.
Maybe the person on disability had the Corvette before the disability. Unlike a lot of people on welfare, they paid into it.
A concealed carry bill passed. They want people to do 16 hours of training. About 99 percent of the people probably already have weapons, and they already know how to use them. The sad part of it is that they want to charge $150 to everyone who has a concealed-carry license. I think the poor can’t afford it but they are going to carry their guns anyway because other people will be allowed to carry. You can look to the jails to be filled up with the poor.
I think state Rep. Monique Davis needs to take a trip to Uganda and see what it’s like for a gay person to not have equal rights. With her being a woman, I’m sure she knows what it’s like. With her idea of gay people not suffering like those who were involved in civil rights issues, I’d have her thrown out of office faster than you can say, “Uncle Tom.”
Members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox were convicted for fixing baseball games. Those cheating players were basically banned for life from baseball. You tell me, why not ban for life all the cheaters who have been taking drugs that improved their game statistics? Their illicit performance surely had influence upon many games that they participated in. What makes them different from the 1919 White Sox?

I read the recent article “Food bus visits Chicago Heights” in the SouthtownStar. Those children who hang out all summer long at the park while laughing, listening to rap music and playing basketball, should have to do something like pick up trash in the park before getting a free lunch. I think we are only training them to be on welfare. Stay home and clean the house for your mother if you need something to do. Be useful to society.
