Dedicated funding for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources could make scenes like this at Matthiessen State Park a more permanent part of Illinois' outdoor opportunities. | File photo

Can anyone tell me what the $2 for Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ state parks has to do with the license plate renewal fee? I thought that money went for road repairs and highways.
Some people have no conscience and just take. In 2012 someone took a large stone bench and stone pot from the entrance to our dental office in New Lenox. Just recently someone dug up all the beautiful conflowers between rose bushes and other perennial flowers from the planting area by the entrance. How low and rude can people be? I’m Mrs. C, and I hope you enjoy my flowers.
It’s been a few months since the election. I’m interested to see what Tim Desmond will do as the new 1st District Oak Lawn trustee.
Regarding a civil union vs. marriage: According to a 2008 survey, 76 percent of the American adult population identified themselves as Christians. All major religions (Christian, Jewish and Islam), according to their beliefs, don’t support the concept of a gay marriage. So why are states passing laws allowing gay marriage? It is one thing to allow a civil union, but please don’t call it a marriage.

To the Midlothian Christian spouting about atheists, let me clear up a few things. Atheists have the same opinion about Judaism and Islam as they do about Christianity. The title “atheist” should probably imply that. Atheists have no interest in disproving religion. All atheists I know, including myself, are open to any evidence for the validity of any of the above. Until then, invalid claims are rightfully dismissed. As far as the accusation that we are condescending, you are mistaking incredulity for condescension. We hold all beliefs to a high standard, and Bronze Age mythologies don’t get special treatment. Peace.
Children in Chicago will have a safe passage route when returning to school. The city has hired 600 workers for this project. I think the gangs are winning.
Some in Congress worry if we deport immigrants who are in America illegally that we’ll lose our work force. What about our recent grads and people displaced from the work force? I think we would save millions on welfare.
To hockey, football and basketball fans who want to attend a game live: I hope you are rich.
Allow me to share my tax dollars at work. The local high school a few weeks ago had three eight-hour days for early registration. This was followed by five eight-hour days for regular registration. School started Aug. 19 and all week there is late registration between the hours of 3 to 6 p.m. The No. 1 question being asked is: “Where do I go to get the fees waived?”
I heard the latest “Transformers” movie will film in Chicago soon. Some might get aggravated by the road closures and disruption of their daily routines, but I think it’s cool we live in an area that attracts so many movies and other projects. I love hearing about the TV show “Chicago Fire” filming somewhere and recognizing a Chicago landmark, well-known or not, when watching a film on the big screen. We are lucky to live in such a cinematic place.
The problem we face is that people who are willing to work are outnumbered by those who vote for a living.

A Speak Out commenter suggested that someone should have taught Trayvon Martin to respect authority, the authority of a wannabe cop profiling him because he was wearing a hoodie and looked suspicious. Sometimes you can’t see the forest for the trees.

I hope the person who learned about other countries’ living standards from “reality TV” doesn’t also comment about their high costs. Most foreign countries have smaller homes because they don’t have room for urban sprawl. They have fantastic public transportation, eliminating the need for an automobile. Their gasoline prices make ours look cheap. My 1,200-foot model would fit in my friend’s family room, but she just complains about the high cost of heating, air conditioning and property taxes. Rather than determine living standards by the bloated ones Americans have been led to accept as normal, the commenter should learn firsthand.
“Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored,” British author Aldous Huxley said. Despite what the Republican Party, Fox News and perhaps your pastor say, the Earth is round and 4.6 billion years old, evolution happens and climate change is real.
So the state of Illinois wants to raise the speed limit to 70 mph. That means some people will be driving 80 to 85 mph. Speed kills. I feel we should go back to the 55 mph limit and enforce it. This would save lives and our precious gasoline. I drive the speed limit and I drive in the right lane. Funny! I never pass anyone.
To the commenter who witnessed a motorcycle-car accident and thinks we are a socialistic country: That’s not what America was or is yet. We pay taxes (at least most of us do) to support basic services. The White House is pushing America into socialism. Handing stuff to people who don’t put forth effort never works out. I don’t understand how anyone could feel good living off the hard work of others. Also, there’s a good chance the victim in that accident will get a bill for service. Don’t take my word for it. Check out countries that have socialistic government.
