Some of you may be taking one last trip before summer unofficially ends. Regardless of your plans, I hope you have a safe holiday. To those who have to work on Labor Day, thank you for your service.

Thank you a million times over to all the tireless volunteers who help at Southland shelters. There are many dogs, cats and other animals that need forever homes. While these animals await that special someone who will love them and care for them, shelter volunteers make sure the animals are comfortable, active and enjoying life. What would we do without such great people?

They really have their priorities mixed up. They put up speed cameras in school zones. With all of the killings and gang shootings going on, they are worried about speeders? I think you ought to worry about the gangbangers and the children’s safety. Make sure those cameras work to catch some gangbangers rather than someone driving 21 mph.

The Arab League is condemning what is happening in Syria. That’s fine. Then let the oil-rich Arab countries take care of this situation, for once. I don’t want to see one American soldier killed when it’s none of our business. If we do an air strike and one civilian is accidentally killed, then we will again be vilified in the Middle East.

John from Oak Lawn

Nowadays we live in a society where it’s all automated or email. No live person will talk to us. I’m trying to refinance my condo and all this lender wants to do is email.

On my way to work I’ve seen this dramatic poster for Feeding America. It shows a drawing of a beautiful little girl with a bowl. It makes me sad to know that there are so many people who are fighting hunger. More must be done to help those who need it.

Someone was complaining that throwing a ball or hitting a ball around is not that important to be paid what they are paid. Well, it is to all the fans that pay the ticket prices to see these sports players. Only when the fans cut back on paying these salaries will their salaries stop growing and growing and growing. For me, I did this 30 years ago and have not missed a thing. I will complain when they start taking my taxes to pay them. That is my line in the sand. Just stop watching them and supporting them.

Why can’t casual music fans who go to concerts realize that other people are there because they love the artist performing? We don’t want to listen to you yelling to a caller that you can’t hear them. We know you want to hear the single. We don’t care about your work day, your troubles at home, etc. If you want to talk or do other things during the show, then please stand farther back where you won’t be ruining it for those of us who want to actually listen to the music.

Aren’t you sick of people who are oblivious to what is going on around them? Look up from your phone once in a while so you don’t trip and fall into a fountain or bump into someone who is carrying a bunch of packages. Be aware that stopping quickly can cause someone else to plow into you. Also, don’t be so quick to criticize other people as you don’t know what they may be going through. It’s unbelievable to me how so many people can be so centered around only themselves.

Delbert Belton, a World War II veteran, was beaten by two teenagers and later died from his injuries. What kind of world are we living in when a man can live through one of the worst wars in history only to have his life squashed out by a couple of hoodlums?

Marian from Chicago

People who have hit hard times, either losing a job or having a sickness, and who get temporary welfare help aren’t bums. The bums are the continually pregnant, always-on-welfare women and their nonworking, always-creating-babies welfare men. There is a big difference between temporarily getting help to pick yourself up and being a parasite by living off of the system.

A commenter from Chicago said something about pushing the conservative Christian agenda. Why do people pushing the homosexual agenda only think it’s Christians who disagree with same-sex marriage? I know Jewish and Muslim people, not to mention those with no religious affiliation at all, who do not support same-sex marriage.

The teachers just finished relaxing for 10 weeks on their summer vacation. Then some of them sent the students home early because they are too hot. Some of these teachers get great pay and health, dental and life insurance plus a pension that is three or four times what some folks on Social Security get. What’s wrong with this picture?

Orland Park

Here is a good riddle. What’s the difference between a politician and a burger flipper? There are two answers. Neither one was meant to be a career, and two, politicians can apparently vote themselves raises anytime they want and burger flippers can’t.

P.K. from Tinley Park

To former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife, former Chicago Ald. Sandi Jackson: If you were putting your family first, you would’ve never stolen money in the first place. I find it sickening that someone, especially an elected official, would use a disease or disorder to cover up their disgraceful behavior of stealing from constituents. Let’s not forget adultery. Depression or being bipolar usually makes someone sad or suicidal and doesn’t cause them to buy Michael Jackson memorabilia and furs, furnish a house in Washington, D.C., and pay his wife thousands of dollars to be a campaign consultant.
