I’m glad NASCAR placed Jeff Gordon into the Geico 400 after alleged race manipulation by others knocked him out of the original field of 12. It’s a shame that some people can’t compete honestly.

The Tinley Park Public Library Concert Series commenced with the popular husband-wife duo of Phil & Amy. An added highlight was their daughter Lucie. Old friends got together for outstanding renditions of old favorite songs. Amy has a spectacular voice that is unsurpassed in the Southland. A resounding ovation was given to this musical family. Kudos to the Friends of the Library for outstanding programming. They love what they do and it shows.

Going on Facebook flashing gang signs and holding guns and a fistful of money is advertising yourself as a drug dealer. It’s not cute. It should be taken seriously especially if you are a parent. It’s worse to be in denial.

BJ from Hazel Crest

Do atheists care where I work, where my children go to school, what kind of car I drive or what my favorite meal is? Of course not. So why do you care what I believe or don’t believe in?

Tom from Oak Forest

I’m with the Chicago Southland Convention & Visitors Bureau. For a full listing of all festivals and events, SouthtownStar readers might want to check out the CSCVB website, visitchicagosouthland.com, or call (708) 895-8200.

Regarding the comment about the weather being more extreme and the comment made that “I don’t remember it raining this much in summer before”: What part of the planet is this person writing from? It sure is not the southwest suburbs. I just heard on the news that we normally get 9 inches of rain by this time from July 1st and we only got 4 inches so far. We have been watering our lawns quite a bit in the last month to keep it from turning brown.

Illinois caught 13 people committing grant or contract fraud, bilking the state out of $16 million total. I don’t think we sent a strong enough message with former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and former Chicago Ald. Sandi Jackson for stealing $750,000 from his campaign fund and she filing false tax returns. I think we need to send a message and recapture our money by taking away houses, cars or other property and never let them run for a state position again.

Pete from Oak Lawn

A commenter stated that teachers need unions and don’t compare teachers to lawyers and doctors who are not unionized. Yeah, lawyers and doctors do not feed at the public tax trough either, so they don’t need a union to secretly steal from the taxpayers for their members’ good salaries and lifetime pensions at the expense of their neighbors. I think it is called theft by deception or legalized plunder.

I’m a pet lover. How in the world do people buy pets online? Don’t you think you should meet the animal first and see its temperament and see how you get along? I think some people are amazingly lazy and foolish nowadays.

Why does it seem like there are no sidewalks in Crestwood? I’ve found that taking a walk in Crestwood is a real challenge. There is a sidewalk here and there, and then there is not a sidewalk. I wish the new mayor, Lou Presta, could do something about this as no one wants to fall down and break a leg.

Regarding minimum wage: People keep saying we should raise the minimum wage of low-income workers. That would be great for Wal-Mart or McDonald’s. I think they can afford to pay higher wages. But it would put a lot of little guys out of business and raise the profits of the big guys. I think people don’t understand how business works or the law of unintended consequences.

I saw a great bumper sticker the other day. It said, “A working person voting for a Republican is like a chicken voting for Col. Sanders.”

A Speak Out commenter preferred animal behavior to human behavior but did not seem to object to the word “uncivilized” to describe gangs and those who beat up and kill people. He must know that animals need to be trained just as humans do to live among civilized people. He should also know that some untrained animals form roving packs that attack, maul and kill people just as thugs and gangs do. Nuclear bombs were used successfully to stop foreign thugs and uncivilized leaders who attacked and killed innocent people in World War II.

My husband and I have been trying to eliminate flat tires in the neighborhood by collecting nails and screws from our alley. We guess these little metal devils must sift out from garbage trucks. We’ll continue our effort.

Sharon and Stan from Chicago

It is truly amazing how the gun control zealots simply cannot believe or accept the fact that people have an opinion that is contrary to theirs. When it comes to the recalled Democrats in Colorado, some are going as far as saying they got recalled because of voter suppression. Really? It just might have been because their constituents did not agree with the legislation that was passed by the politicians. This is still a constitutional republic where the elected officials are supposed to represent the will of the people not just their own personal ideology.

Does anyone have some fun recommendations of places to check out in the south suburbs during fall? I’m making an effort to do more outdoor activities and think it would be great to discover some hidden gems.
