I saw a recent article about the 10 fastest trains in the world. Sadly, it said none were in the United States. I guess we are not as high tech as the rest of the world.
The St. Fabian Knights of Columbus are having their annual spaghetti dinner on Oct. 13th. I recommend that people go for a relaxing evening of great food and good music. Our family and a few friends went the last two years. We had a good time and even met new friends. The food was great. The atmosphere in the gym is like being in a real Italian restaurant at a very good price, and it all goes for charity. Treat yourselves this Sunday at St. Fabian Catholic Church in Bridgeview. It starts at 4 p.m. and goes until 7 o’clock.
Thank you, Chicago White Sox, for not losing 100 baseball games during the 2013 season.
The extremely rich and powerful in the United States have done their jobs quite well. Every day you read comments from people complaining about unions, the Tea Party or other entities that are a very small segment of our society, blaming them for all of the ills in America. Wake up! The problem is with the extremely rich and powerful who work against the rest of us, the working people. The rich and powerful are winning because they have us fooled into listening to the agendas of the wrong people.
Does Tinley Park really need a Wal-Mart? There is a huge Wal-Mart right next door in Orland Hills.
Even though I don’t work in the food service industry, I must speak out for the waitresses. Just take your tax and double it for your tip. Leaving a poor girl a $1 tip is just sad. If you can’t afford to dine out then stay home.

I believe the parents may also be responsible for this melee at Rich South High School in Richton Park. I think the students who were involved obviously were not taught to make wise decisions, obey the rules or practice self-discipline. Lawyers cannot solve that. It strictly comes from the home. There would not have been a breakout of fighting if these students had obeyed the rules and not decided to break them. You continue to find fault in every institution and every teacher. Learning begins at home.
The Democrat-led Congress rammed through Obamacare, but now they are crying when a Republican-led Congress has some problems with their supposedly angelic law. People keep saying that Obamacare is a good law but you just have to tweak it to make it perfect. Well, the Republicans want to tweak it, so let’s tweak it. But all of the Democrats are looking at their shoes or out the window now that the issue of changing the law comes up. It takes two parties to compromise.
We, the officers of the city of Chicago’s 7th District, Zone 6, wanted to say rest in peace, Chicago police officer Alex Valadez. Star No. 9534, justice has been served. It’s officially stated that Alex’s end of watch was June 1, 2009. We all know his watch never ended. He continues to watch over his fellow officers just as we watch over his loved ones. We miss you, buddy, and we will never forget.
I have a question for Speak Out readers. At our next election when someone runs unopposed, if no one votes for them or less than a majority of voters do, will that position be vacant or do they win automatically?
The SouthtownStar has done a wonderful job, as always, in covering high schools sports this year. It is nice to hear about all the local schools in the area as well as showcasing athletic achievements. It is really a pleasure to look in the newspaper and get a relief from the relentless battering of professional sports media we have now.

Congratulations to the World War II veterans from the Honor Flight who recently visited the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C., despite the U.S. government shutdown and guarded entrance. These elderly heroes are the same brave warriors who landed on beaches. No Washington, D.C., bureaucrat or guard was going to stop these brave soldiers from the greatest generation.

Be cautious, drivers, when traveling west as the sun is low in the sky and the long shadows throughout the day make for poor visibility.
The real reason we are in crisis every month is because there are members in Congress who have so much dislike for President Obama. For the president to tell them what to do only irritates them even more.

I just want to say I agree with the other commenter about the placement of the sidewalk on Ridgeland Avenue in Oak Forest. As a mother of two kids I would never have my kids cross where the city placed that sidewalk. It would be much safer that they crossed at the stop sign that is two houses down. It doesn’t make much sense that the city didn’t place the sidewalk there.
After the sentencings of former Cook County Commissioner Williams Beavers, former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and former Chicago Ald. Sandi Jackson, I feel the judicial system needs to change in a big way. To be fair to the American people it seems we now need a guidebook to help the judicial system maintain . This will disclaim any wrongdoings in the future to all ethnic groups. As my grandmother used to say, “What is good for the goose is good for the gander.”
