If you go to a downtown Chicago restaurant for a sandwich it could cost more to park your car for an hour than the meal. Thanks, Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Mike P. from Chicago

Thank you to the person who picked up the check for my cousin and me at Denny’s on Black Friday. It certainly was appreciated and I will reciprocate in the near future when the opportunity arises.

DK from Oak Lawn

I think your intake of sugar has nothing to do with triggering diabetes. I think diabetes nowadays is mostly hereditary and started by other factors but not by eating sugar. You could eat 10 candy bars per day and never get diabetes if you’re not predisposed to it.

They want to open up 140th Street and 141st Street in Orland Park to build a Mariano’s supermarket. My three children and I live in that subdivision. We do not want those streets opened. We have many children walking around in the neighborhood. Please do not open up those streets.

Who pays for the politicians’ insurance? How much do taxpayers pay? I don’t hear anyone mentioning that at all.

Emma from Blue Island

If any of the members of our armed forces has to go back to any foreign country for a third tour, then one senator and one House representative has to go with him. See how fast those tours of duty will cool down. See how fast our troops will come home.

John from Bridgeport

Technology is great in some aspects but a real detriment in others. One example is education. If I asked a junior high schooler a math question I’d bet 20 percent couldn’t answer unless they had a calculator. Ask them, “What state is New York City in?” I’d bet they would have a tough time with that one also unless they looked it up on their electronic device.

A recent Speak Out commenter referred to a hospital as a nonprofit organization. What are you thinking? Take a look at a hospital bill and then tell me it’s a nonprofit organization.

I agree with another Speak Out commenter. Jackie Evancho should be recruited to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl. She did a great job at the Green Bay Packers vs. Detroit Lions game on Thanksgiving. Nobody else I’ve heard can sing it the way she did.

Joe

About a great idea. Here’s a new concept. Legislators should be forced to pay back Social Security and pensions with the funds coming in with red-light cameras, cigarette taxes, parking meters, etc., to balance the budget. Pay back misused funds. They are simple words with special meaning: “pay back.”

JoAnne from Bridgeview

I think big government took over the education system and we now spend twice as much money on education as we did in the 1970s, yet the schools have gotten arguably steadily worse. I’m afraid the same thing is going to happen to the health care system. Big government is going to take over the health care system. They are going to spend more money, and our health system will deteriorate slowly over time. Of course they will try to blame somebody else.

I’d like newspapers to print the names of the local politicians who voted to cut food stamps so the voters are aware.

Mike

I think you should take a look at what your wonderful Republican Party is doing by stopping any improvements tried anywhere.

It seems to be that the football games the Chicago Bears lost were not lost due to the offense or quarterback not performing. I think these games were lost due to the defense. Perhaps next time the Bears should draft some new defensive tackles and guards.

More about why regular people can’t make any better than 0.01 percent on savings: Investing in Wall Street is risky. I have lost large amounts, but I also have made more money than if I had put it in a bank. Ask friends who invest for information or recommendations. Good luck. In regards to the holidays, remember to donate a little to those in need.

Willow Springs

To BBK: You must know that our police and fire departments, as well as hospitals, are essential entities that are open for the well-being of all. Retail stores being open on holidays is not a life-and-death situation. It is all about making a buck, not serving mankind. I would like to know if the corporate bigwigs who decide to open stores are at work on these holidays or sitting at home surrounded by family and friends.

Homer Glen

Regarding pension reform: The politicians have had their say on pension reform. Now it’s time for all union members to vote these people out of office. “Incumbent” has become a dirty word. The money was always there. They just squandered it away. A contract is a contract. Changing the rules at the 11th hour is not right or ethical.

Mokena

It was so nice to be in Wisconsin where I can buy real diesel fuel instead of the biodiesel that I think Illinois tries to pass off as real fuel. I think Illinois also hides the fact that it’s biofuel. The stickers are tiny that mark it as “bio.” Down South it says in big letters that it’s bio, also known as not real diesel fuel. Illinois, of course, also seems to charge more for what I think is their garbage biofuel.

Several nonprofit Southland groups sell holiday cards as a fundraiser at this time of year. I think you should buy from them.
