Not a day goes by that I do not enjoy seeing Christmas decorations. Whatever your belief is, it has to make you smile. It can be a house, store or city. It makes my day.

Linda from Monee

I didn’t hear Jackie Evancho sing our national anthem on Thanksgiving Day. She has a beautiful voice. The best performance I ever heard was by Martina McBride. It was a couple of years ago in Pittsburgh before a Pittsburgh Steelers playoff game. Outdoors in 15-degree temperatures, her voice was nearly flawless.

MJ from Worth

When these politicians want to raise a tax, they always like to raise the cigarette tax. Why not raise the tax on liquor? Liquor causes drunks. Liquor causes drunk drivers.

RC from Oak Lawn

Well, I know what’s isn’t taught in college: how to speak properly. I don’t think Chicago Bull Derrick Rose was able to speak one full sentence without muttering at least one “um.”

I blame the baby boomer generation for the mess were in.

Rick from Evergreen Park

Regarding tours of duty: John from Bridgeport, to expand your thought, which I love by the way, the politicians should also get the same pay and benefits the armed forces get. They would not be entitled to their back pay, or their family would receive benefits that are only the same as our armed forces families get.

To the person who is sick and tired of customer service at stores: Well, we sales associates are tired of being treated like pieces of garbage. We make minimum wage and are instructed to kiss the customer’s butt. A lot of customers are downright rude and ignorant to us. We are not animals that you can bark orders to. If you are snotty to me, I am not going to be very pleasant to you.

Recently a professional baseball player received a contract of one quarter of a billion dollars for 10 years of service. Considering the value of baseball to the welfare of all mankind, that seems like a paltry price to pay for using a stick to hit a ball. Thank God there is television available to me to view the wondrous skills of this gift to all mankind. On second thought, I think I’ll take a pass on that viewing opportunity. Hamburger flipping awaits.

About shopping: OK, I’ve had it with the flimsy gift boxes retailers give out to wrap your Christmas gifts. There was nothing like a Marshall Field’s gift box.

Ever since the Republicans gained a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has refused to put anything on the floor that comes from them. Clearly, nothing is ever going to get through the Senate. Everyone claims to want to be nonpartisan. That’s all a lie.

Orland Park

I recently listened to comments from talk show host Rush Limbaugh criticizing Pope Francis. I think Limbaugh spreads hatred and intolerance through his rants on the radio. Who the heck is he to pass judgment on our loving new pope? I think Limbaugh is a disgrace. How can anyone listen to this guy?

People in Illinois need to realize that Springfield doesn’t make the decisions. It’s the Chicago machine of Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan, Illinois Senate President John Cullerton, all of their allies and cronies and the public unions in Cook County that rule Illinois.

Bob from Oak Forest

Why do so many people find it so hard to use their turn signals? It’s the law and a courtesy to those around you to know which way you are going to go. I think some people should stop being so lazy because it is not that hard to pull or push that lever.

When I was a girl, Christmas was about the Christ child, midnight Mass, singing Christmas carols, family visits and get-togethers. We waited for an aunt or uncle we hadn’t seen for a long time. Gifts were minimal. We were happy with whatever we received from Santa Claus. Our Christmas tree was put up on Christmas Eve by my parents. We were surprised the next morning. I still don’t know how they managed to do that without us knowing. Let’s get back to old traditions. It didn’t hurt us to show love, respect and kindness to others and the less fortunate.

U.S. Rep. Trey Radel has pleaded guilty to buying cocaine in Washington, D.C., but the congressman also voted to impose mandatory drug testing for anyone getting government assistance. It looks like you wanted to test the wrong people. The people who ought to be tested are in the U.S. Congress. What hypocrisy!

Were the police called? I’m just wondering if the person who took time to comment on the theft of property in Speak Out about the woman pruning and stealing cuttings from bushes in a parking lot, also took the time to call 911 and report a theft in progress. Maybe this person even got the license plate number of the cream colored sport utility vehicle to pass along to the police. Who knows what else this person stole, maybe someone’s Christmas decorations?

Chicago

If you’re looking to help Southland nonprofits at this time of year, ask what seasonal gift items might be available from them. Animal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge has a 2014 calendar that you can purchase. I think it’s a win-win. Animal lovers get something to enjoy all year long, and the shelter gets some much-needed funds to continue its work on behalf of dogs, cats and other homeless animals.
