Regarding recruiting: The Illinois High School Association better look at how Homewood-Flossmoor High School girls varsity basketball coach Anthony Smith did this recruiting. What’s to stop other sports from building super teams? He must not be that good of a coach if he felt he must do it this way. H-F should take quick action. This is a slap to the school and athletes. What’s next? Performance-enhancing drugs?

The Internal Revenue Service targeted, investigated and audited thousand of American conservatives, Republicans and independents, and I think the mainstream media sat by and did nothing about it as if they were protecting their Democratic friends. I think spying on citizens is the sort of thing done in North Korea or the former Soviet Union, and the press sat back and twiddled their thumbs like it was a big joke.
Reader Joe Schiele’s recent letter in the Chicago Sun-Times asks an excellent question. What will the Chicago City Council ban next? He also states how they use “for the sake of our children” as an excuse. If they don’t use the children as an excuse, then they are using the taxpayers as an excuse. This gentleman is right on the money.
To the guy with fogged windows who tried to compare driving in the current environment with driving over 80 years ago, saying cars built before 1933 had no heaters and there were no problems driving back then: Current traffic and distracted drivers didn’t exist 80 years ago so there is no comparison. Also, how can you say there were no problems with fogged windows then? Were you driving in 1933? If so, you shouldn’t be driving now.

Regarding Martin Luther King Jr.: Fifty years ago on Jan. 20, Chicago Bulls great Michael Jordan’s kids could not have legally attended the same school as my kids, and they could not have taken water from the same water fountain. We have come a very, very long way thanks to Martin Luther King Jr. and others. I think we have a long way to go.
I’m concerned about the direction of Tinley Park. There have been a rash of unsolved burglaries, officials are flip-flopping on video gambling, and there is a trend toward attracting discount businesses. On top of everything, village marketing director Donna Framke had her sister-in-law Donna Lee Framke bid on projects. The village representatives need to get their acts together and start to listen to residents.

It’s amazing that the family of Dennis McGuire, a death row inmate, plans to sue Ohio over the execution because it took the guy nearly 25 minutes to die and they say it was an “experiment.” What about Joy Stewart, the eight-months pregnant woman the guy murdered? Maybe her family should sue the murderer’s family too. Only in America!
Our U.S. government is giving away hundreds of millions of dollars in foreign aid yet they seem not to take care of our own people here in the United States. How can our senators and House representatives allow this? I wish the people would stand up and start throwing these congressmen out of office.
Commonwealth Court Judge Bernard L. McGinley in Pennsylvania has ruled that expecting people to show photo identification to vote is unreasonable and puts a burden on the right to vote. What is so unreasonable to expect someone to have identification? We need identification to do everything nowadays yet we don’t need them to vote? I think this is just some plan to get people who should not be voting at all to vote.
Doesn’t Oak Forest allocate money to shovel sidewalks along Cicero Avenue from 159th Street to 151st Street? People without cars have to walk on Cicero Avenue and I think it’s very dangerous now.
About New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie: A scandal, oh my! What did you think would happen if you threw a bunch of money at a politician with no accountability?
I’m upset about the farce of the Chicago Public Schools closing nearly 50 schools and opening 17 new charter schools. Here’s a little known fact: Teachers at charter schools are still in the CPS retirement system, which is broken.
I think the concealed-carry permits are just a license to kill. People get angry all the time. This gives them the chance to pull out a gun and shoot someone.
Illinois should not be called the Land of Lincoln. It should be called the Land of Corruption. These politicians are getting dirtier and dirtier. The problem is we don’t have enough of them going to prison. They still want to spend more money while Illinois has astronomical debt. How?
