About the incident involving pop star Justin Bieber: If he didn’t have a valid driver’s license how was he able to rent a car? Should the rental company be responsible for the expenses, which probably will come out of the taxpayers’ pocket, used for any and all charges resulting from this incident?
All policemen and firemen are invaluable. These are the only professions that should be unionized. Other than these, it should be on a merit and seniority basis. Professions like electricians, plumbers or public school teachers should be based strictly on merit and seniority.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign passed more than $100,000 as the cost of an undergraduate degree. Administrators said they kept the tuition increase to 1.7 percent to mirror inflation. Why didn’t administrators keep increases tied to the inflation rate in prior years? The average increase in recent years, when administrators weren’t so benevolent, was 7 percent to 8 percent. The inflation rates during those years were at least 4 percent to 5 percent less than tuition increase percentages. That baloney of needing to impose unfair tuition rates was to retain “quality” professors. So where did that need go this year?

To the person commenting about their opinion of our government. Here’s mine: If you vote Republican you want everyone to fend for themselves. You want to give the wealthy tax breaks because you think it will somehow trickle down to you. You want no regulations to protect consumers so that we have another crash like in 2008. You want low wages for the middle class and poor. You want the government to interfere in a woman’s reproductive health decisions.
Regarding gun shootings: I think most to nearly all of the most severe mass shootings in public places have occurred in the Midwest, the West or on the East Coast. I wonder, if mass shootings occurred in the gun-loving South, would they love their guns so much?
About victims of priest abuse: The victim of sexual abuse allegedly endured from the Rev. Norbert Maday and his friend Thomas E. Hacker at St. Louis de Montfort Catholic School in Oak Lawn says he is so ashamed of the abuse. Why has the shame of this crime been transferred to the victim and not hung around the neck of the perpetrator? I hear the same for assaulted women. Put shame where it belongs. The victim has enough to bear.

What does it take to throw New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez out of baseball? His teammates, his union and baseball fans want him thrown out. Commissioner of Major League Baseball Bud Selig is chickening out again when it comes to drug users. He will go down in baseball history and sports history as the most gutless commissioner ever. Dump Rodriguez and Selig at the same time. Good riddance to rotten apples!
It seems Divvy, this company responsible for all of these bike stations in Chicago, is bankrupt. I think whoever picked this outfit ought to be fired because he doesn’t know what he’s doing. How much taxpayer money was wasted with this?
Do we really have to give such breaks to Mariano’s to move into Orland Park? If we have to pay stores to come into Orland Park, then they were probably not welcome. Let them move somewhere else where they think they can make more money.
Jim from Orland Park
Anyone who believes that President Obama didn’t know about Operation Fast and Furious or that there was no video as the cause for the attacks on our embassy in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11 2012, when four Americans were being slaughtered or that the Internal Revenue Service was targeting conservative group or that Obamacare would not be affordable for the policyholders and taxpaying middle class is totally delusional. I understand his play on words. When you say, “I was not told,” or “was not told directly,” it means “I knew but you can’t prove it.”
Yes, winter is here in the Chicago area. Do we really thank our village administrators and snowplow drivers for keeping our streets clear? I’m pretty sure that’s what they are paid for.
It’s getting to be that time of year again for some people to lie and abuse on their income tax return to get more money back.
Regarding unlearned or untaught family responsibility: What does it say about some families when able-bodied teen and adult children are home in the house and their parents are outside doing the shoveling? Say what you want about older generations, but children were taught their responsibilities, by both word and example, to the family and at home.
Congratulations, Midlothian. How wonderful to see that a small village came together in a time of need for St. Christopher School! It just goes to show you if you believe in a cause, a miracle can happen. You saved your school. It makes my day. St. Christopher’s parishioners and residents should be very proud of themselves and the community.
