Regarding Illinois High School Association Competitive Dance: Good luck to all the varsity poms squads from our area schools as they travel to Bloomington to participate in competitive dance for the state championship. The best of the best have been invited to compete in state from Jan. 31 to Feb. 1. Our area high schools such as Lincoln-Way West, Oak Forest, Shepard, Lemont, Reavis, Stagg, Providence, Lincoln-Way East, Oak Lawn, Bremen, Thornton, Lockport and Sandburg all deserve a huge shout-out for their incredible hard work. Good luck, girls.
People who like to complain about everything and insult people should try spending some time doing charity work. You’d be surprised at how much better you’ll think about life.
In the Republican debate, gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner made a very true statement: “I am not the problem. Everyone I’m running against has been part of the problem for decades.” This is very true. There are Democrats and Republicans who have been in office too long. There should be a term limit for every politician. You can do a maximum of eight years and then out you go. Rauner is speaking the truth.
About God: I am so tired of people commenting that God isn’t allowed in schools or you can’t say, “Merry Christmas,” anymore. You can pray at school and read your Bible when you have downtime, recess or lunch. No one will stop you. You just want everyone to agree with you or join you, and that’s not gonna happen. Say, “Merry Christmas” if you want. No one will stop you. God and his teaching come from family and church. It’s not the school system’s job. Stop whining.
Hey, Chicago, do not complain about your snow removal or your mayor. You could be in Atlanta. That’s where they play the blame game. Watching their news reports, both Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal blamed others including the National Weather Service. At least in Chicago, the snow is not meteorologists Jerry Taft’s or Tom Skilling’s fault.
Do you ever wonder why these Hollywood stars need to spend millions every year on themselves and have all of these award shows? They are just glorifying themselves. I think it’s sick.
It is reassuring to know that U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk have solved Illinois’ problems of bankruptcy, high unemployment, the pension fiasco, crumbling infrastructure and the hungry and homeless because otherwise they would not have the time or be able to focus their attention and efforts on the crucial issue of the naming of a federal building after Prohibition agent Eliot Ness.
In rebuttal on guns: So in the gun-loving South, there are no crazy, disgruntled or deranged people amongst the ranks of “God-fearing citizens”? I’d like to see that. One thing is true, and that is that disturbed people are part of every area of society. It knows no boundaries.
It’s about time the Catholic Church’s higher-ups got the bad publicity they deserve for eroding our church’s image not only in Chicago but also around the United States and the world. They also did damage in Ireland and Poland.
Some of us seniors have great next-door neighbors. They help with our garbage, they collect our mail and bring it to our door, and they help carry our groceries from the car and other things. I’d like to give a huge “thank you” to them especially during our bad winter weather.

Even though the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001 was started by President Bush, it was President Obama who signed the PATRIOT Sunsets Extension Act of 2011, which extended three provisions including roving wiretaps. That program is President Obama’s now. You can’t keep blaming previous presidents, whoever they may be or whatever political party they may be, for current programs especially when those programs could have been discontinued if they are so offensive to the current administration.
Here’s something to consider: An alternative to the Boy Scouts of America is Trail Life USA. They can be found at traillifeusa.com.
Regarding tax time: I don’t see how wanting our maximum refund is abusing the tax system. We work, pay property and other taxes. We should get it back for our families, rather than the government giving it to everyone else.
The person taking Indiana to task for not having enough equipment to remove the amounts of lake-effect snow apparently doesn’t understand how lake-effect snow behaves nor do they live anywhere near where this happens. I live in Chicago’s Southeast Side and can get 8 inches to 10 inches of snow while someone I know who lives a few miles from me to the east or west will receive only an inch or two. The Indiana towns right across the state border from me usually do a much better job of snow removal than Chicago and the south suburbs.
Some say if they would allow priests to marry then some of this child sexual abuse wouldn’t happen. Hogwash! These people are predators. They became priests to get closer to their victims.
