When I worked we could only be promoted two grade levels at a time. Reading about the Cook County Circuit Clerk employees receiving pay increases from $12,000 to $18,000 more per year raised my blood pressure. Spending taxpayers’ money like it’s water. Who’s watching the henhouse? The hens themselves?

V.J. from Hazel Crest

They’re saying they are going to pass this pension bill on property taxes. But here’s another thing: They must think people are stupid. They aren’t going to put the tax reform in until 2016 because they are going to be up for re-election in 2015. Do they think the taxpayers are going to forget this?

People complaining about the slow travel on the trains through Evergreen on 95th Street think the engineer should be fined $1,000 for going slowly. These people ought to stop and consider the engineers are on a schedule. The train’s speed is actually limited by conditions and area. They don’t know what is up ahead but the train driver has to be thinking maybe 2 to 3 miles ahead in order to stop a long, heavy freight train. To suggest that they be fined $1,000 is ludicrous. If there is something to be done about it, talk to the people who own the tracks. The other reason they may be going slow is they probably have to be on the lookout for the idiotic drivers who think they can beat the train.

Victor from Orland Park

I work for a local school district and all the employees got letters saying that their insurance premiums were going to be going up due to the significant increase in the cost of the Affordable Care Act. Now excuse me, but I believe I remember Barack Obama repeatedly saying your health care premiums are going to go down $2,500 a year for the average person. When he sold that to us, besides telling us you won’t get dropped from your insurance, you can keep your doctor. This man will lie about anything. How are we supposed to believe anything he says?

So taxes are being blamed for the high prices of gasoline in different areas. My question is, if Cook County has higher taxes than Will County, then why is gasoline in Will County higher?

To Jeff: You incredulously asked what part of the ACA we don’t like? How about the fact that the Democrats, without allowing any Republican input, never even read the plan, then forced it on us against the will of many Americans. And we now know it was totally based on lies such as “If you like your plan you can keep it” or “Your insurance cost will go down $2,500 per year” or “You can keep your own doctor”? I hope you were kidding with your question but unfortunately, I know you were not.

Philip: How long are you going to keep repeating the “The president did say that we could keep our doctors and keep our insurance” line. Can’t you come up with anything else? Yes, a very small percentage of our population had insufficient insurance coverage, and they were given a reprieve. The majority of people have benefited from this law. Try again. Why is the Affordable Care Act so bad?

To all joggers and small-dog walkers concerned about coyotes: For as little as $10 you can purchase pepper spray at any of the larger sporting goods stores. The sprayer is about the size and weight of a small flashlight and can reach 10 feet to discourage any animal who threatens, have it four legs or as past news has reported, only two.

Always remember to forget the troubles that pass your way; never forget the blessings that come each day: A big, big “shout-out thank you” to two angels named Steve who helped us change a flat tire in Beggars Pizza’s parking lot Thursday night. You both were our blessing that day.
