THE SKINNY

Coming off a fifth-place showing at the Chicago Heights Classic, host Thornwood (3-2, 1-0) took down Thornton on Friday in a SouthWest Suburban Red game. Thornwood’s Donte Thomas found a cutting Kenneth Bates for a two-handed dunk late to put the Thunderbirds up 64-55 with 1:02 to go.

THE TURNING POINT

Trailing 38-34 at halftime, Thomas and the Thunderbirds went to work in the third quarter. Thomas scored 11 points, including a late fast-break dunk, as Thornwood outscored Thornton 20-12 in the third to take the lead for good, going up 54-50 through three quarters.

THE STAR

Limited by foul trouble, a leg cramp and a twisted ankle, Thomas still managed a huge game, finishing with 18 points and 17 rebounds.

BY THE NUMBERS

Justin Taylor had a huge day for Thornton (1-3, 0-1), finishing with 26 points and 11 rebounds, but the Wildcats shot just 8-of-28 from the field in the second half. Rashaad Alexander (14 points), Kaliph Fagan (12) and Chelby Frazier (11) contributed for Thornwood.

QUOTABLE

“Great win against a really tough team. I couldn’t let my team down, couldn’t go to the bench. It meant the world to me to be in the game. We couldn’t lose.” – Thomas
