During Andrew’s 58-51 loss Jan. 11 to Thornwood, Nicole Dominguez not only couldn’t get her shots to drop, she also was hobbling for part of the game with a hurting hip.
In Tuesday’s SouthWest Suburban Red rematch in Tinley Park, she was fit — and firing.
Missing her first attempt, a layup, Dominguez went 7-of-7 from there, swishing four three-pointers as the Thunderbolts rolled 62-49.
Molly Franson topped Andrew (19-5, 10-3) with 26 points and seven rebounds, while Dominguez finished with 19 points, Tiana Karopulos 14 points and Lauren Bialas seven rebounds. Thornwood (14-10, 7-6) was paced by Aliyah Owens (15 points, 6 rebounds), Aaliyah Wricks (9 points, 7 rebounds), Breneka Walker (9 points) and Tashea Tinglin (9 points).
Dominguez had just five points in the first meeting vs. Thornwood. She wasn’t doing much better at Monday’s practice.
“I stayed after for about an hour just shooting,” she said. “I was sick, and I felt like my shot wasn’t right. I think that helped me (Tuesday).”
Andrew trailed 16-14 at the outset of the second period when Franson hit a three, and Dominguez followed with two more. Three possessions later, Dominguez drained yet another trey, boosting the Thunderbolts to what would be a 36-23 halftime lead.
Franson did more than shoot a three. The 6-foot-2 junior had one of her best inside games of the season, aggressively going to the basket and converting four three-point plays, two on assists from Bialas.
“Sometimes I look forward to it (contact) — when I’m getting the calls,” Franson said, smiling. “When I’m not it makes the hurt a little more painful. But it’s fun. I’ve learned how to absorb contact.”
Thornwood, which stayed close early thanks to some solid outside shooting by Tinglin and Owens, fell into a double-digit deficit for good with a 1-of-10 possession dry spell near the end of the third period.
