Brother Rice was the victim of a 17-0 run in the first half and still found itself with the ball and a chance to beat De La Salle at the buzzer.
But the Meteors’ Brandon Hutton blocked Alex Majewski’s three-point attempt with time expiring as visiting De La Salle upended the Crusaders 55-53 Friday night in a Catholic League South battle to close things up in the league.
No. 4 Brother Rice, which entered the night atop the league standings, fell to 18-4, 7-2. De La Salle won its fifth straight game after a three-game losing streak to improve to 15-6, 7-3.
“We have to play at St. Rita and at Providence and win both games to win the conference,” Crusaders coach Pat Richardson said. “And the way we’re playing, we’re bound and determined to try to lose them. We don’t want to play Brother Rice basketball.”
Majewski finished with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Cal Kennedy added 15 points and nine boards for Brother Rice.
De La Salle likely is out of the conference championship picture but the Meteors are eying a big run in the playoffs.
“This is a real good to peak,” said the Meteors’ Alvin Ellis, who had 25 points, including nine in a 17-point first-half run. “We’re going to go into the state championship series with some pride.”
The seedings for the Argo Sectional came out Thursday, with Brother Rice earning the No. 4 seed and De La Salle the No. 7 seed.
