A warehouse fire in Chicago Heights on Tuesday forced a polling place to move to a new location.

The fire, which was across the street from the Golden Towers Senior City residential facility, 1706 East End Ave., which was being used as a polling place, forced the operation to move to Lincoln School, 1520 Center Ave., according to Courtney Greve, a spokeswoman for Cook County Clerk David Orr’s office.

Greve said the fire started about 3 p.m. The fire department blocked several streets surrounding the fire and the polling location was closed.

Firefighters evacuated the five election judges due to smoke in the building, Greve said. The ballot box and all the completed ballots that had been turned in were taken to the new location to be counted, she said.

The only ballot item for Chicago Heights voters was for the Second Congressional District primary.

Multiple calls to the Chicago Heights Fire Department were not immediately returned.
